It\u2019s all about programs and outreach for aspiring female engineers, some of which starts well before college. These include:<\/p>\n<p>-Multiply Your Options, an all-day conference for eighth grade girls<\/p>\n<p>-A five-week intensive summer program called BRIDGE that prepares underrepresented freshmen students for the engineering curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>-An active chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, which helps support students\u2019 professional interests, and,<\/p>\n<p>-A female-focused <a id=\"wimseinline\" href=\"https:\/\/uconn.givecorps.com\/causes\/4511-women-in-math-science-engineering-wimse-learning-community?utm_source=iun&amp;utm_medium=fnd&amp;utm_campaign=feb2018&amp;utm_term=XX02D118&amp;utm_content=inlinelink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Living and Learning Community called WiMSE (Women in Math, Science and Engineering)<\/a>, a residential experience for female STEM majors at the Peter J. Werth Residence Tower.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left  et_pb_text_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_number_counter et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light  et_pb_number_counter_0 et_pb_text_align_center et_pb_with_title active\" data-number-value=\"24.3\" data-number-separator=\"\">\n<div class=\"percent\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u201cThe good news is that we have made strides in all majors, but significant work remains to be done,\u201d said Dr. Daniel D. Burkey, Professor-in-Residence in Chemical &amp; Biomolecular Engineering and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Diversity.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" et_pb_row et_pb_row_1\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2  et_pb_column_1 et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text et_pb_module et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_text_align_left  et_pb_text_2\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>\u201cAlumni and philanthropic support is a critical piece,\u201d Burkey said. \u201cBy providing scholarships and other financial incentives and making it easier for underrepresented students to choose UConn, we increase our success at getting and retaining those students here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burkey\u2019s advice to young women is to pursue their passion and find a mentor or other female STEM role model.
