Bitter, biting winds. Glacial waters. The harsh environment of the Antarctic should be utterly uninhabitable \u2013 and yet, countless species have flourished in its icy seas and on its rocky shores.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How have organisms as diverse as elephant seals and Antarctic hair grass adapted to these extreme conditions? And how will they continue to adapt &#8212; or not &#8212; in environmental change over seasons, decades, and evolutionary timescales?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\">A new <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW148156014 BCX4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/show-award?AWD_ID=2535692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW148156014 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">$18.4 million award<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\"> from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 (MSRI) program <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\">aims to build <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\">the infrastructure to answer these questions<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW148156014 BCX4\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW148156014 BCX4\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-253508 size-medium img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-300x237.png\" alt=\"Word cloud in the shape of Antarctica, titled &quot;Antarctic GIGA DATA,&quot; including words like &quot;Biodiversity,&quot; &quot;Genome,&quot; and &quot;STEM&quot;\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-1024x810.png 1024w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-768x607.png 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-1536x1214.png 1536w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-2048x1619.png 2048w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-531x420.png 531w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GIGA-DATA-Word-cloud_ProjectLogo_V3-841x665.png 841w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project, \u201cGenome Infrastructure catalyzing next Generation Antarctic Data, Access, Tools, and Analytics\u201d (GIGA DATA), is led by Alison Murray at the Desert Research Institute. $6.6 million of the award is coming to UConn, where co-PIs Rachel O\u2019Neill and Jill Wegrzyn will contribute their genome sequencing and assembly expertise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe Antarctic is the largest desert on the planet \u2013 it&#8217;s a really unique environment,\u201d says O\u2019Neill, a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) and director of UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/genomics.institute.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Institute for Systems Genomics (ISG)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cIt\u2019s also an extreme environment where most life on Earth would not survive. Her research group at UConn uses a comparative genomics approach across the tree of life, having sequenced hundreds of eukaryotic genomes. She was a principal investigator on the international Telomere-to-Telomere project, which completed <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/03\/183560\/\">sequencing the human genome<\/a> in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2022 and the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/08\/solving-for-y-research-team-completes-long-anticipated-genome-sequencing-of-y-chromosome\/\">human Y chromosome<\/a> in 2023<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and the Primate T2T Consortium, which sequenced the genomes of our great ape relatives.<\/span> <span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">O\u2019Neill\u2019s lab brings special expertise in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">genome assembly and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">repeat analysis \u2013 detangling and decoding many thousands of repeated, short sequences of DNA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to reveal their impact and exaptation as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">regulatory elements<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe challenge on my end is the diversity of samples that we&#8217;re going to get \u2013 as well as the quality of the samples,\u201d she says. \u201cSome of those are going to be really challenging to get enough data to actually generate genome assemblies. Typically, they are awarded to teams developing mechanical equipment, like a high-powered telescope. Her research combines computer programming and genetics, and she has developed cutting-edge software to analyze challenging genomes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe can\u2019t sequence a genome end to end,\u201d she explains. \u201cSequencing involves extracting the DNA, breaking it into smaller pieces, and then putting it back together again. And in doing so, we have to think about which algorithms are most appropriate for that process \u2013 as well as how to balance both accuracy and efficiency.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of GIGA DATA, Wegrzyn is looking forward to applying her expertise in sequencing difficult genomes. Fortunately for her, the Antarctic environment is replete with these kinds of organisms \u2013 like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.krillscience.com\/publication\/the-enormous-repetitive-antarctic-krill-genome\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Antarctic krill<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, whose recently sequenced genome was revealed to contain almost 50 gigabases (for reference, the human genome contains only three).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThat is one of the largest animal genomes that\u2019s been assembled and sequenced to date,\u201d says Wegrzyn. \u201cSometimes, the smallest things are the most complicated \u2013 and the largest things are easier.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">GIGA DATA will also benefit from Antarctica\u2019s unique geopolitical situation, notes Wegrzyn.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really unusual continent, in the sense that nobody really owns that region of the world,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd as a result of that, we are working with the global scientific community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The genomes sequenced by the researchers will pave the way for future exploration of biodiversity in the Antarctic and beyond.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">\u201cThis database will build a resource for people to do <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">other work, such as <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">population genetic studies over <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">seasons and years<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">say<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">s O\u2019Neill. \u201cRight now, without genomes, [scientists are] looking at something like 5% of the actual genomic sequence. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">They\u2019re<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\"> not necessarily assessing everything that could be <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">linked to adaptation<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104806409 BCX4\">. (Arvind Varsani)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Pole to Pole<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O\u2019Neill and Wegrzyn are also both collaborators on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/09\/snapshot-from-the-field-studying-ecosystem-evolution-in-the-fastest-warming-region-on-earth\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Evolving Meta-Ecosystems (EVOME)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> initiative, charting biodiversity at the other end of the earth \u2013 the Arctic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the species present in both regions are quite different, the challenges are similar.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at the same types of things in both projects,\u201d says Wegrzyn. \u201cWe&#8217;re looking at these regions of the world that are very rapidly warming, and these species are having to adapt to this new environment. Do they have the capacity to do that? By understanding their genomes, we&#8217;ll get a better idea of what&#8217;s going on.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to Murray, O\u2019Neill, and Wegrzyn, the GIGA DATA research team includes:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\"
