{"id":253506,"date":"2026-10-02T07:10:40","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T11:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=253506"},"modified":"2026-09-28T15:18:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T19:18:44","slug":"threads-of-identity-celebrates-belonging-and-culture-in-storrs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/10\/threads-of-identity-celebrates-belonging-and-culture-in-storrs\/","title":{"rendered":"Threads of Identity Celebrates Belonging and Culture in Storrs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/events.uconn.edu\/event\/2367721-exhibit-reception-threads-of-identity\">The Threads of Identity: A Showcase of UConn\u2019s Cultural Centers &amp; Programs<\/a> exhibition is open in Homer Babbige Library, celebrating the work of all seven cultural centers and promoting the inclusion they foster at UConn.<\/p>\n<p>The cultural centers provide spaces and opportunities to establish a foundation for meaningful engagement across UConn\u2019s diverse community. Each center represents a different perspective, reflected through their uniquely cultivated displays in the Norman D. Stevens Gallery on the Plaza. (Sydney Herdle\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the Middle Eastern Cultural Programs\u2019 display, they chose to represent culture through handmade puppets based on traditional Persian characters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to take something from our own identity to somewhere where everybody passes by, and not necessarily just people from the culture centers, and to bring that to so many other students is wonderful,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/middleeasterncultural.programs.uconn.edu\/card-patterns\/#:~:text=the%20UConn%20community.-,Ali%20Etesamifar,-(pronouns%3A%20(they\/them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ali Etesamifar<\/a>, the MECP graduate assistant, who made the puppets in the display.<\/p>\n<p>For the cultural centers, having the opportunity to bring their work and highlight their resources to such a wide audience has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of this exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/puertoricanlatinamerican.culturalcenter.uconn.edu\/meet-our-staff\/#:~:text=Meet%20Our%20Staff-,Alfred%20Guante,-Director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfred Guante &#8217;05 (CLAS),<\/a> director of the Puerto Rican\/Latin American Cultural Center (PRLACC), creating a space of belonging is at the root of his work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I want to tell people is to \u2018come in\u2019 to the center. People may see this center\u2019s name that they don\u2019t relate to it, but I can assure them that there are other people in the same room that also don\u2019t relate, but they\u2019re there and they love it,\u201d says Guante, who was involved with PRLACC as a UConn student.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating belonging is at the core of this exhibition, and by displaying these unique cultures and opportunities for the UConn community to see, the sense of inclusion these centers provide will continue to flourish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach center has a mission that we uphold, but really, it\u2019s always about figuring out what each individual needs as a student and letting them know that there is a space for them,\u201d says Guante.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Threads of Identity exhibition will be on display in the Norman D.
