{"id":253601,"date":"2026-09-29T15:00:51","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T19:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=253601"},"modified":"2026-09-29T11:02:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T15:02:15","slug":"more-than-4000-students-strong-uconn-engineering-begins-a-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/09\/more-than-4000-students-strong-uconn-engineering-begins-a-new-year\/","title":{"rendered":"More Than 4,000 Students Strong, UConn Engineering Begins a New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The halls, classrooms, laboratories, and student spaces across UConn Engineering are once again buzzing with activity.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, 4,175 undergraduate students are enrolled in the UConn College of Engineering, including 1,049 first-year students beginning their engineering journeys as members of the Class of 2030.<\/p>\n<p>They arrive at a College spanning disciplines from biomedical engineering and computer science to robotics, materials science, civil engineering, and aerospace and manufacturing, each offering students opportunities to turn ideas into solutions for some of society&#8217;s most complex challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 4,000 students call UConn Engineering home, and that is something we are incredibly proud of,\u201d says Dean JC Zhao. \u201cOur students are the driving force behind this College. They bring energy, curiosity, and new ideas into our classrooms every day. Our job is to give them the tools, experiences, and opportunities to transform those ideas into innovations that can make a difference in Connecticut and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The College of Engineering\u2019s fall 2026 enrollment reflects the wide range of engineering disciplines available to students across UConn. Here\u2019s a breakdown of the College\u2019s total undergraduate enrollment by major across all campuses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biomedical Engineering: 389<\/li>\n<li>Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: 264<\/li>\n<li>Civil Engineering: 442<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Engineering: 108<\/li>\n<li>Computer Science: 617<\/li>\n<li>Computer Science and Engineering: 222<\/li>\n<li>Data Science and Engineering: 89<\/li>\n<li>Computer Engineering: 118<\/li>\n<li>Electrical Engineering: 360<\/li>\n<li>Engineering Physics: 16<\/li>\n<li>Management and Engineering for Manufacturing: 112<\/li>\n<li>Multidisciplinary Engineering: 48<\/li>\n<li>Materials Science and Engineering: 81<\/li>\n<li>Mechanical Engineering: 1,235<\/li>\n<li>Robotics Engineering: 74<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The College also welcomed 1,049 first-year students this fall\u00a0across all UConn campuses, beginning their UConn Engineering experience as\u00a0members of the Class of 2030.\u00a0The College&#8217;s first-year enrollment represents a\u00a0significant part of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/08\/uconn-welcomes-class-of-2030-joining-thousands-of-returning-huskies-for-new-semester\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn&#8217;s newest class<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Approximately 6,400 first-year students joined UConn across its campuses this fall, meaning\u00a0roughly\u00a0one\u00a0in every six new Huskies is beginning their undergraduate experience in engineering.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But enrollment tells only part of the story.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWelcoming more than 1,000 new engineering students is exciting, but what matters most is what happens after they arrive,\u201d says Daniel Burkey, associate dean for undergraduate education and diversity. \u201cFrom their first semester through Senior Design, our students have opportunities\u00a0to\u00a0gain hands-on experience, connect with faculty and industry, and find a community within UConn Engineering. We want every student to leave here not only prepared to\u00a0work as\u00a0an\u00a0engineer, but\u00a0to also be\u00a0confident in their ability to make an impact.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The College offers 15\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/undergrad.engineering.uconn.edu\/majors\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">undergraduate majors<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, supported by\u00a0about\u00a0190 faculty members, along with career development resources, co-op and internship opportunities, student organizations, honor societies, and other extracurricular experiences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those experiences begin early and continue throughout a student&#8217;s time at UConn.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students can apply classroom concepts through experiential education, undergraduate research, student organizations, design teams, internships, co-ops, and industry partnerships. They learn alongside faculty conducting nationally competitive research in areas including advanced materials and manufacturing, bioengineering and health, smart and resilient infrastructure, artificial intelligence and machine learning, defense innovation, and energy and sustainability.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The result is an engineering education built not only around what students learn, but what they can do with that knowledge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The fall semester gives students opportunities to start building relationships outside the classroom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Career fairs and professional development programs connect students with employers and introduce them to career pathways across engineering and technology. College and department events bring together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and industry partners, while student organizations create spaces for students to find communities centered around their disciplines, identities, interests, and goals.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That community extends well beyond current students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From Oct. 3 through 8,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.uconn.edu\/reunion-week\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Engineering All-Class Reunion Week<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0will welcome alumni, students, faculty, donors, industry partners, and friends back to UConn for six days of events celebrating the connections and experiences that define the College.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those connections are particularly important for a College whose graduates play a significant role in Connecticut&#8217;s workforce.
