The building will serve as an incubator space and hub for quantum researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and collaborators. UConn President Radenka Maric, Provost Pamir Alpay, and interim vice president for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship Lindsay DiStefano were among the delegation on hand to cut the ribbon on the space.

“To the researchers, students, public leaders, industry partners, and community members gathered here: thank you for investing your expertise, energy, and confidence in this shared vision,” said Maric. “Together, we are building a talent pipeline, an innovation ecosystem, and a place where the next generation can help lead a transformative field.”

U.S. Rep. (Matthew Mroz / UConn Photo)

QuantumCT is a nonprofit, public-private partnership established to build the quantum ecosystem in Connecticut. UConn, Yale, Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), industry leaders, and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development shape the QuantumCT on its governing board.

The nonprofit was created through the success of the UConn-led QuantumCT Engine, an intricate, collaborative proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its Regional Innovation Engines program. The proposal brought together academia with public and private enterprise and industry to propel Connecticut as the nation’s leading accelerator of quantum technology.

Alpay was principal investigator on the proposal, working closely with Yale vice provost for research Michael Crair and other leaders throughout the state. Its overarching goal is supporting research, technology development, workforce training, and industry and community engagement, helping translate scientific breakthroughs into economic opportunity.

“Connecticut has the scientific expertise, entrepreneurial talent, and industry partnerships to turn quantum discoveries into technologies that improve lives and strengthen our economy,” Alpay said. “Through QuantumCT, UConn and our partners are building the pathways that move ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace—supporting new ventures, deepening corporate collaboration, preparing students for emerging careers, and creating high-quality jobs across the state.”

In 2023, the NSF awarded the proposal a $1 million development award, leading to the establishment of the QuantumCT nonprofit. Meanwhile, the QuantumCT Engine proposal continued to advance through intense competition for a much bigger award, and the State of Connecticut invested $61 million in quantum infrastructure to support the effort.

In July 2026, after almost four years of scrutiny and anticipation, UConn and the State received the good news. The QuantumCT Engine was awarded a two-year, $15 million initial grant, and if benchmarks are met, that funding could reach $160 million over the 10 years. If fully realized, it would shatter the record for largest grant in UConn’s history. The State added another $60 million, bringing the potential quantum investment to more than $280 million.

“Quantum technology represents one of the most significant economic and scientific opportunities of our time,” said Gov. Ned Lamont. “Through investments in innovation, workforce development, and strategic partnerships, Connecticut is building an ecosystem that will attract companies, create high-quality jobs, and compete on a global stage.”

New Haven was chosen as the hub for QuantumCT for a myriad of reasons. The city has development space to build the necessary infrastructure to support quantum research across many disciplines. Geography plays an important part as well, with New Haven accessible to major technology markets like New York and Boston and the academic corridor of partner institutions like UConn, Yale, SCSU, and more.

“New Haven continues to strengthen its role as a center for innovation, discovery, and entrepreneurship,” said Mayor Justin Elicker. “QuantumCT’s presence at 101 College Street brings new energy to our innovation district and creates opportunities for residents, students, researchers, and businesses to participate in the quantum economy.”

The headquarters was made possible through $1.35 million in support from the State Department of Economic and Community Development as part of the New Haven Quantum and Life Sciences Innovation Cluster, with the City of New Haven and building owner Carter Winstanley Enterprises providing matching funds. QuantumCT will operate the space through grants, programs and services, and private fundraising.

“Connecticut has the talent, institutions, and partnerships necessary to lead in quantum technology,” said U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, one of the ribbon-cutters at the event. “The opening of this hub reflects the power of sustained investment in research, education, and community engagement to create opportunities for future generations.”

In addition to formally opening the headquarters, QuantumCT launched “Chai & Quantum,” an outreach program designed to make the science more accessible and understandable to all. The program welcomes anyone curious to come and explore the possibilities that quantum presents through informal conversation and expert insight.

“Today’s opening represents much more than a new office,” said Vivek Ramakrishnan, CEO of QuantumCT. “It is a gathering place where researchers, entrepreneurs, students, industry leaders, and community members can come together to build Connecticut’s quantum future. With the support of the NSF, our partners, and the State of Connecticut, QuantumCT is creating a pathway from breakthrough discovery to real-world impact and economic opportunity.”

Esme Lombard of QuantumCT contributed to this story.

The 4,500-square-foot space is in the heart of the state’s quantum infrastructure and will serve as an incubator for research and innovation

[2471,1731,2256,2194,2673,2076,2364,2235,2227
[2381
post-253960","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economic-development","category-entrepreneurship","category-innovation","category-new-haven-county","category-quantum","category-research","category-technology-commercialization","category-today-homepage","category-uconn-edu-homepage
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
