{"id":30560,"date":"2023-03-27T17:38:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T17:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.engr.uconn.edu\/?p=30560"},"modified":"2024-04-04T03:18:28","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T07:18:28","slug":"new-data-science-and-engineering-major-leads-to-booming-career-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/03\/new-data-science-and-engineering-major-leads-to-booming-career-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"New Data Science and Engineering Major Leads to Booming Career Opportunities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Claire Galvin, UConn School of Engineering Manager of Communications and Digital Strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Connecticut School of Engineering is pleased to be on the forefront of workplace trends and demands, this time with the unveiling of a new undergraduate major.<\/p>\n<p>The Computer Science and Engineering department will launch the Data Science and Engineering Bachelor of Science in the fall 2023 semester.<\/p>\n<p>The field of data science has evolved dramatically over the past decade. According to data available through the career website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/hiring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dice.com<\/a>, Data Scientists and Data Engineers have experienced more than 40 percent year-over-year growth in the first 10 months of 2022. In addition, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 40,500 new Data Scientist positions are anticipated between 2021 and 2031.<\/p>\n<p>Computer Science and Engineering Professor Ion Mandoiu said organizations ranging from large technology companies to small nonprofits need assistance in managing and understanding their data.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30561 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.engr.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-business-woman-looks-on-a-large-blue-screen-wi-2022-06-07-18-20-01-utc-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"A businesswoman looks on a large blue screen with chart.\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/450;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen companies evolve to make data-driven decisions, they start building toward a specific, clear goal based on all information they already have, but maybe weren\u2019t using to potential in the past,\u201d Mandoiu said.<\/p>\n<p>Data science is a field that combines statistics, scientific computing, algorithms and other numerical systems to analyze or extrapolate insights from structured or unstructured data.<\/p>\n<p>The UConn College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has recently developed two bachelor degrees in data science areas of study, and the School of Engineering has carefully designed this plan of study to complement the CLAS degrees, from the lens of computer science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents in this program will have access to interdisciplinary curriculum and initiatives throughout the School of Engineering,\u201d said Computer Science and Engineering Department Head Sanguthevar Rajasekaran. \u201cWe\u2019re leveraging our professors to offer a holistic education in this rapidly advancing field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Data Science and Engineering degree will apply theory, techniques and tools through the data science lifecycle and employ the resulting knowledge to satisfy stakeholders\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<p>Required Data Science and Engineering courses will include \u201cIntroduction to Computing for Engineers,\u201d \u201cData Structures and Object-Oriented Design,\u201d \u201cIntroduction to Discrete Systems,\u201d \u201cIntroduction to Data Science and Engineering,\u201d \u201cContemporary Issues in Computer Science and Engineering,\u201d \u201cCybersecurity Lab,\u201d \u201cAlgorithms and Complexity,\u201d \u201cBig Data Analytics,\u201d \u201cPrinciples of Databases,\u201d \u201cIntroduction to Machine Learning,\u201d and \u201cSenior Design I &amp;
