Joe Courtney visited the University of Connecticut on Friday, July 7 to hear the latest on crumbling concrete foundation research conducted by the UConn School of Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The Congressman\u00a0was welcomed by UConn President Radenka Maric and UConn Engineering staff and faculty. Courtney and Maric were also joined by Debbie McCoy, a Vernon resident whose home was affected and who\u2019s among the leaders of a group who have supported the research and testing.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney was brought up to speed on the latest research efforts conducted through the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30861\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30861 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.engr.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/courtney-2-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"Concrete samples collected at UConn.\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/208;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Concrete samples collected at UConn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The UConn School of Engineering has been a leader in <a href=\"https:\/\/crumblingconcrete.engr.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crumbling concrete research.<\/a> To date, the team has developed a testing method that is minimally invasive to the foundation in use, and is time and cost-efficient; and conducted intense research based on 100+ houses showing 70+ homes with sulfide-bearing minerals that can contribute to crumbling concrete. Next steps will include expanding the evaluations of mitigation methods, with a focus on cost-effective alternatives to replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney briefly discussed the Community Project Funding that was included in the FY23 omnibus to support ongoing research into crumbling foundations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
