Photo by Gerry Goodstein<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Starting with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crt.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Connecticut Repertory Theatre\u2019s<\/a><\/span> production of <em>A Dream Play<\/em> which premiered on March 24, followed by two new exhibits honoring the legacy of the late puppeteer Frank Ballard at the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bimp.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry<\/a><\/span>, and concluding with a three-day <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.puppetconference.uconn.edu\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">international conference<\/a><\/span> on puppetry and post-dramatic performance, there is no shortage of opportunity for fans of puppetry to indulge their passion for this particular art form.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Dream Play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CRT\u2019s production of <em>A Dream Play<\/em> runs through April 3 in the Studio Theatre in the Fine Arts complex. Written by Swedish playwright August Strindberg, this surrealistic play provides director Joseph Johan Therrien with an opportunity to tell the story of Agnes, the daughter of the Hindu god Indra, through a variety of hand puppets, rod puppets, masks, and other theatrical artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>In his preface to the play, the playwright said, \u201cEverything can happen, everything is possible and probable. Time and space do not exist.\u201d CRT\u2019s production puts Strindberg\u2019s words to the test in this entertaining theatrical challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honoring Frank Ballard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two new exhibitions honoring Frank Ballard opened on March 27 at the Ballard Institute. They are <em>Frank Ballard: An Odyssey of a Life in Puppetry<\/em> (curated by UConn puppet arts alumna Rolande Duprey) and <em>Frank Ballard: Roots and Branches<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31765\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/ballardc048_lg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31765  img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/ballardc048_lg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;p&gt;Frank Ballard's innovative programs brought the art of puppetry alive. Photo by Sean Flynn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ballard first taught classes in puppetry at UConn in 1964. His innovative puppet productions soon led to the creation of UConn\u2019s puppet arts program, the only program in the United States offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in puppetry training and education.<\/p>\n<p><em>An Odyssey of a Life in Puppetry<\/em>is a retrospective of the stories, designs, construction processes, and performance of Ballard\u2019s many productions, and includes rare video footage from the museum\u2019s archives. It features puppets and sets from\u00a0<em>The Bluebird<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Two By Two<\/em>,\u00a0<em>H.M.S. Pinafore<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Magic Flute<\/em>, <em>Peer Gynt<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Golden Cockerel<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n<p><em>Roots and Branches <\/em>explores the experiences that influenced Ballard, who was born in Alton, Ill. in 1929, to pursue a life in puppetry. It looks at influential figures in the world of puppetry, from the 1930s traveling shows of Romain and Ellen Proctor to the creative genius of Muppet creator Jim Henson. Ballard\u2019s fascination with the Kungsholm Miniature Opera and Sidney Chrysler\u2019s toy theater operas is explored, as well as the influences of a wide range of global puppet traditions he studied, including Karag\u00f6z, Javanese rod-puppet theater, and Chinese shadow theater.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>International Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The department of dramatic arts in the School of Fine Arts is sponsoring an international puppet research conference April 1-3. This is the first time such a conference has been held in the United States, and it is drawing participants from North and South America, Europe Africa, and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a series of demonstrations, workshops, and performances the conference will feature keynote addresses by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vermontstudiocenter.org\/peter-schumann-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Schumann<\/a><\/span>, founder and director of the acclaimed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breadandpuppet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bread &amp; Puppet Theater<\/a><\/span>; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.masongross.rutgers.edu\/theater\/faculty\/eileen-blumenthal\" target=\"_blank\">Eileen Blumenthal<\/a><\/span>, historian and professor of theater history &amp; criticism at Rutgers University\u2019s Mason Gross School of the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to sessions restricted to those registered for the academic conference, there are a series of events that are also <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.puppetconference.uconn.edu\/public_events.html\" target=\"_blank\">open to the public<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31762\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/ballardc022_lg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31762  img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/ballardc022_lg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;p&gt;Puppets take center stage at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry.
