The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes<\/a> (CPIA) at UConn held its annual awards dinner on Thursday night at the Rome Ballroom on the Storrs Campus. The event is held annually to recognize UConn’s top student-athletes, and is a celebration of National Student-Athlete Day.<\/p>\n

The highest honors of the evening are the Donald Kinsman Awards, named after the former CPIA Director. They are presented annually to those student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement during their time at UConn.<\/p>\n

The Kinsman winners this year were senior Maya Moore<\/a> of the women’s basketball team, who is an individualized major, and junior Kemba Walker<\/a> of the men’s basketball team, who is majoring in sociology.<\/p>\n

Moore, who had one of the most accomplished careers in collegiate women’s basketball history, finished her time at UConn with a 150-4 record as a Husky. She led the Huskies to four Final Fours and two National Championships, while also claiming the Big East regular season and Tournament Championship in each of her four years.<\/p>\n

Moore was honored as the Wade Trophy recipient in her final three years at Connecticut, and won the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, and AP and USBWA Player of the Year Awards in 2009 and 2011.<\/p>\n

Academically, Moore was named the ESPN\/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and the Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011. She was a Second Team Academic All-American in 2009, and First Team in 2010 and 2011.<\/p>\n

Walker, who finished his junior season as a unanimous Consensus First Team All-American, led the Huskies on an improbable run to the Big East Tournament Championship and to a National Title during his final season at UConn.<\/p>\n

Walker was honored as the Bob Cousy Award recipient in his final year, along with earning NCAA West Region Most Outstanding Player, NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Kinsman Awards, a top student-athlete from each of UConn’s 24 athletic teams was honored. Those honored were: junior Nicholas Ahmed<\/a> of baseball, who is a sport management major; junior Anthony Cascio<\/a> of men’s soccer, a communication sciences major; senior Derek Chard<\/a> of football, a finance major; senior Amanda Cote<\/a> of rowing, an allied health sciences major; junior Caroline Doty<\/a> of women’s basketball, a sports management major; senior Matthew Dubrowski<\/a> of golf, a communication sciences major; senior Adam Genuario<\/a> of men’s swimming and diving, a political science major; senior Melissa Gonzalez<\/a> of field hockey, a coaching and administration major; senior Brittany Heninger<\/a> of women’s cross country, an exercise science major; senior Coleen Hepburn<\/a> of women’s track and field, an allied health sciences major; and senior Emily Herb<\/a> of women’s tennis, a sociology major.<\/p>\n

Also honored were: senior Jessica Hovancik<\/a> of women’s swimming and diving, a molecular and cell biology major; senior Elizabeth Littlewood<\/a> of rowing, a physiology and neurobiology major; senior Andrew Marcus<\/a> of men’s tennis, a resource economics major; senior Matthew Miller<\/a> of men’s ice hockey, a communication sciences major; senior Rebecca Murray<\/a> of volleyball, a psychology and communication sciences major; senior Mike Rutt<\/a> of men’s track and field, an exercise science major; senior Lauren Sparks<\/a> of lacrosse, a communication sciences and English major; junior Benjamin Stewart<\/a> of men’s basketball, a business management major; senior Edward Strosnick<\/a> of men’s track and field, a physical therapy major; senior Jody Sydor<\/a> of women’s ice hockey, a pharmacy major; senior Julianne Towers<\/a> of softball, a communication sciences major; senior Annie Yi<\/a> of women’s soccer, an exercise science major and doctoral candidate in physical therapy; senior John Yurek<\/a> of football, a biological sciences major.<\/p>\n

The CPIA staff includes director Bruce Cohen, CPIA counselors Rebecca Taylor, Ingrid Hohmann, John Miceli, Alana Linick, Felicia Crump, Mansour Ndiaye, and Kelli Kozaryn, administrative assistant Cynthia Gilmore, and graduate assistants Emily J.
