The shadow figures were part of the collection of the late anthropologist Walter Fairservis, and were donated to the Ballard Institute by his wife, Jano Fairservis. The puppets were used to perform tales from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh by traveling puppet troupes in the early twentieth century.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39923\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39923\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2011-05-art-lobby-lewitt-03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39923 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2011-05-art-lobby-lewitt-03-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"Painting by Sharon Kocay, on display at the UConn Health Center.
