(Tina Encarnacion\/UConn Health Center Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Health Center physicians went back to school this week to brush up on some skills they likely didn\u2019t learn in medical school. The Physician Leadership Symposium focused on teaching more than 40 doctors from the UConn Medical Group (UMG) how to hone their team management skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysicians are trained to be autonomous in their thinking and actions,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uconndocs.uchc.edu\/PhysicianProfile.aspx?ID=202\">Dr. Adam Silverman<\/a>, the interim medical director of UMG and organizer of the event. \u201cBut health care is a \u2018team sport,\u2019 requiring the ability to be both a team member, and sometimes a team leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silverman describes it as teaching physicians \u201chow to play football after years of playing tennis.\u201d These skills are especially important as the country\u2019s health care environment keeps changing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of us just focus on taking care of our patients,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.agingnet.uchc.edu\/bios\/coll.html\">Dr. Patrick Coll<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uconn-aging.uchc.edu\/\">UConn Center on Aging<\/a>. \u201cAs the health care system changes, we\u2019ve reacted to the changes rather than being a part of that change. (Tina Encarnacion\/UConn Health Center Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The keynote speakers for the symposium included Dr. Barry Silbaugh, the CEO of the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), and Kevin O\u2019Connor, an ACPE faculty member who specializes in physician executive leadership, innovation, and organizational development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Key elements of the symposium included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How does a medical leader foster creativity and innovation with a primarily scientific team of independent thinkers?<\/li>\n<li>How to turn around mistakes, errors, and failure to your advantage.<\/li>\n<li>How can a physician executive produce results that both work the bottom line and are creative at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>The relationship of creativity in thinking about one\u2019s own career and the reality of life management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The symposium included interactive workshops that focused on hard and soft skills of leadership through innovation, problem solving and process management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor someone like me who was never schooled in business matters, I\u2019m hoping to learn some of the practical things about developing a better business model,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grad.uchc.edu\/faculty\/bios\/mccullough.html\">Dr. Louise McCullough<\/a>, director of stroke research. \u201cIt\u2019s time for us to step up and I think this is a great opportunity for physicians to become more involved in the leadership process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silverman says he hopes the symposium serves as a spring board for a number of follow-up programs designed to encourage the development of future physician-leaders at the Health Center.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health Center physicians went back to school this week to brush up on some skills they likely didn\u2019t learn in medical school.
