(Janine Gelineau\/UConn Health Center Photo)\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/anderson_lg-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/anderson_lg-322x420.jpg 322w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/anderson_lg-76x100.jpg 76w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/anderson_lg.jpg 384w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 230px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 230\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Joseph Anderson.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers at the UConn Health Center are learning more about different types of hard-to-detect indicators of colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>In an article published in the February 2011\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expert-reviews.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1586\/egh.10.86\">Expert Review of Gastroenterology &amp; Hepatology<\/a>,\u00a0Dr. Joseph Anderson, associate professor of medicine, addresses different characteristics and classifications of lesions in the colon that can become cancerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ones we call \u2018flat adenomas\u2019 are a much bigger part of the discussion now,\u201d says Anderson, a gastroenterologist in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.uchc.edu\/\">Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a>. \u201cThey don\u2019t always show up in colorectal cancer screenings, which can make them especially worrisome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson, who co-wrote\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.acg.gi.org\/media\/releases\/ACG2009CRCGuideline.pdf\">American College of Gastroenterology\u2019s updated guidelines<\/a> for colorectal cancer screening, continues to find links to colorectal cancer and tobacco use. His part in the guidelines was to highlight the risk that smokers have for colorectal cancer. He also is lead author of a UConn study to be published in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/jcge\/Abstract\/publishahead\/Risk_Factors_for_Sessile_Serrated_Adenomas.99198.aspx\">the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology<\/a> that finds a strong association between smoking and lesions known as sessile serrated adenomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSessile serrated adenomas tend to be flat in nature and thus may be difficult to detect,\u201d Anderson says. \u201cIn addition, their transition to colorectal cancer may be faster than traditional polyps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The studies add to Anderson\u2019s recent papers examining the association of smoking with flat polyps, published in the June 2010\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.giejournal.org\/article\/S0016-5107(09)02866-1\/abstract\">Gastrointestinal Endoscopy<\/a> (the journal for the American Society of Gastroenterology), and smaller serrated lesions called aberrant crypt foci, published in the July 2010\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ajg\/journal\/v105\/n7\/abs\/ajg2010109a.html\">American Journal of Gastroenterology<\/a> (the journal for the American College of Gastroenterology).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re finding more reasons to rethink our approach to screening people who\u2019ve been using tobacco,\u201d Anderson says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the UConn Health Center are learning more about different types of hard-to-detect indicators of colorectal cancer.
