Fortinsky and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agingnet.uchc.edu\/bios\/kenny.html\">Dr. Anne Kenny<\/a>, professor of medicine and UConn Health Center geriatrician, are collaborating with Magaziner on a study of the role of exercise in a hip fracture patient\u2019s ability to walk again.<\/p>\n<p>The second annual Aging Research Day, subtitled \u201cImproving Outcomes in Older Adults Through Research and Evidence-based Practice,\u201d coincides with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uconn-aging.uchc.edu\/\">UConn Center on Aging<\/a>\u2019s 25th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important accomplishment for a \u2018young\u2019 medical school and a prime example of a multidisciplinary center which has brought together clinicians, educators and scientists from across many different disciplines, professions and schools,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agingnet.uchc.edu\/bios\/kuchel.html\">Dr. George Kuchel<\/a>, Center on Aging director.<\/p>\n<p>Half the presentations were from UConn faculty:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nemsi.uchc.edu\/physicians\/bios\/polkowski.html\"><strong>Dr. Gregory Polkowski<\/strong><\/a>, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery in the New England Musculoskeletal Institute:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cImproving Perioperative Outcome After Major Orthopaedic Surgery in the Elderly: A Multimodal Approach.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.uconn.edu\/directory\/details.cfm?id=268\"><strong>Richard Bohannon<\/strong><\/a>, professor, UConn Department of Physical Therapy:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cMaking Measurement Matter: Using Objective Data to Guide Physical Therapy Practice with Older Adults.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.agingnet.uchc.edu\/bios\/cherniack.html\"><strong>Dr. Martin Cherniack<\/strong><\/a>, professor of medicine and director of the Health Center\u2019s Ergonomics Technology Center:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cStatic Postures at Work and Musculoskeletal Disease Risk in an Aging Workforce.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.uconn.edu\/index.php?\/delaney\"><strong>Colleen Delaney<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor, UConn School of Nursing:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cMulticomponent Home Care Intervention for Older Adults With Heart Failure: An Academic Clinical Partnership.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/uconndocs.uchc.edu\/PhysicianProfile.aspx?ID=138\"><strong>Dr. Cheryl Oncken<\/strong><\/a>, professor, Department of Medicine, and program director of the Health Center\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/crc.uchc.edu\/Default.htm\">Clinical Research Center<\/a>:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cEffects of Smoking Cessation on Bone Mineral Density and Body Composition in Postmenopausal Women.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Poster Awards <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four presenters tied for the Basic Research category:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Xin Zhou<\/strong>, postdoctoral fellow:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe Role of Memory T-cell Subset Secreted Cytokines on Influenza Cytotoxic CD8+ T-cells.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uconn-aging.uchc.edu\/staff\/deangelis.html\"><strong>Anthony DeAngelis<\/strong><\/a>, postdoctoral fellow:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe Role of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) in the Pathogenesis of Detrusor Underactivity.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.agingnet.uchc.edu\/bios\/smith.html\"><strong>Dr. Philip P.
