{"id":41316,"date":"2011-04-27T15:24:10","date_gmt":"2011-04-27T19:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=41316"},"modified":"2011-08-26T11:45:39","modified_gmt":"2011-08-26T15:45:39","slug":"2011-high-school-mini-medicaldental-school-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2011\/04\/2011-high-school-mini-medicaldental-school-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"2011 High School Mini Medical\/Dental School Graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[flickr-gallery id=&#8221;72157627184306473&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 80 students from 20 Connecticut high schools took part in the 2011 <a href=\"http:\/\/sdm.uchc.edu\/prospective\/hcop\/minimed.html\">High School Mini Medical\/Dental School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-week series of Thursday afternoon lectures by Health Center faculty concluded with the awarding of diplomas in the Low Learning Center April 21.<\/p>\n<p>The lectures covered medicine, dental medicine and research.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen Health Center faculty members gave presentations, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/grad.uchc.edu\/faculty\/bios\/pappano.html\"><strong>Dr. Achilles Pappano<\/strong><\/a>, Professor Emeritus, Department of Cell Biology:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe Rational Use of Drugs\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/regenerativemedicine.uchc.edu\/faculty\/bios\/rowe.html\"><strong>Dr. David Rowe<\/strong><\/a>, director, Center for Regenerative Medicine and Skeletal Development:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe Connecticut Stem Cell Initiative\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchc.edu\/vicepresident\/\"><strong>Dr. Cato T. Laurencin<\/strong><\/a>, vice president for health affairs and medical school dean:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cOrthopaedic Surgery\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/uconndocs.uchc.edu\/PhysicianProfile.aspx?ID=482\"><strong>Dr. Linda Barry<\/strong><\/a>, assistant professor of surgery:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cBecoming a Surgeon\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.uchc.edu\/physicians\/bios\/deckers.html\"><strong>Dr. Peter Deckers<\/strong><\/a>, Dean Emeritus of the medical school:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cPrecursors of Professionalism\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other topics included cardiovascular disease, gastroenterology, oral health, reconstructive dentistry, psychiatry, immunology, obstetrics and gynecology, bone disease, neurosurgery, and combined degree programs offered at UConn.<\/p>\n<p>The students who attend the annual Mini Medical\/Dental School are interested in careers in medicine, dental medicine or biological science and are selected by their guidance counselors or science teachers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[flickr-gallery id=&#8221;72157627184306473&#8243;] &nbsp; Nearly 80 students from 20 Connecticut high schools took part in the 2011 High School Mini Medical\/Dental School.
