{"id":42614,"date":"2011-07-25T10:39:59","date_gmt":"2011-07-25T14:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=42614"},"modified":"2013-10-11T15:38:15","modified_gmt":"2013-10-11T19:38:15","slug":"medical-school-alum-returns-to-support-health-career-opportunity-programs-hcop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2011\/07\/medical-school-alum-returns-to-support-health-career-opportunity-programs-hcop\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical School Alum Returns to Support Health Career Opportunity Programs (HCOP)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A graduate from the UConn School of Medicine class of 1991 has established an endowed scholarship for graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Peter Lopez, now an orthopaedic surgeon in Tampa, was back on campus to deliver the keynote address at the July 22 closing ceremony for three Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative programs.<\/p>\n<p>The HPPI programs come under the UConn Health Center\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/medicine.uchc.edu\/prospective\/hcop\/index.html\">Health Career Opportunity Programs (HCOP)<\/a>, designed to raise awareness and proficiency in science among Connecticut students from diverse backgrounds, provide them a mentoring and support system, and encourage them to pursue health professional careers. HCOP\u2019s director, <a href=\"http:\/\/medicine.uchc.edu\/prospective\/hcop\/hurley.html\">Dr. Marja Hurley<\/a>, mentored Lopez when he was a UConn medical student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to give back, to throw the rope back over the wall,\u201d Lopez says. \u201cBecause without that rope, I wouldn\u2019t have gotten over that wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez\u2019s gift of $25,000 established the Sharon and Peter Lopez Endowed Scholarship, a merit- and need-based scholarship with priority consideration given to students from underrepresented populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Lopez has been very supportive,\u201d Hurley says. \u201cThis was his idea.
