Dr. David McFadden, a nationally recognized surgeon, educator and researcher, will join the UConn Health Center Jan. 3<\/strong> as the new Chairman of the Department of Surgery.<\/p>\n

McFadden is currently professor of surgery and associate dean for regional academic affairs at the University of Vermont School of Medicine, and has previously led surgery and general surgery departments at the University of Vermont, West Virginia University, and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed his surgery residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. McFadden has a track record of success in building surgery programs and will be a strong addition to our academic medical center,\u201d says Dr. Bruce Liang, interim dean of the UConn School of Medicine and director of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center. \u201cWe are extremely grateful to Dr. Jay Lieberman for leading the search committee and to Dr. Denis Lafreniere, for his service as interim chair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clinically, McFadden has expertise in the areas of hepato-pancreato-biliary and minimally invasive surgery, and was voted among the Best Doctors in America <\/em>in 2003-2004, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012.\u00a0He is a past president of the Association for Academic Surgery and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and is a member of many surgical organizations including the American Surgical Association, Society of Surgical Oncology, New England Surgical Society and the Southern Surgical Association.<\/p>\n

McFadden has a deep commitment to education and mentoring and has received numerous awards by peers and trainees alike. He has received funding from the NIH, the VA, and non-federal sources and has authored or co-authored more than 250 publications. In addition, McFadden continues to do extensive research on the evaluation and treatment of hepato-pancreato-biliary and other diseases.<\/p>\n
