{"id":47328,"date":"2011-09-28T13:01:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T17:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=47328"},"modified":"2011-09-29T10:15:35","modified_gmt":"2011-09-29T14:15:35","slug":"board-passes-fiscal-year-2012-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2011\/09\/board-passes-fiscal-year-2012-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Board Passes Fiscal Year 2012 Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UConn Board of Trustees passed the University\u2019s $1. 03 billion budget for fiscal year 2012 during its Sept. 28 meeting, which is approximately the same as UConn\u2019s fiscal year 2011 budget.<\/p>\n<p>The University had to close a budget gap of more than $45 million, following a cut to UConn\u2019s state appropriation as Connecticut grappled with record budget deficits. In fiscal year 2011, UConn\u2019s state appropriation was $329 million; it is $284 million for fiscal year 2012.<\/p>\n<p>In order to close this deficit, the University was forced to make wide-ranging budget cuts, according to Chief Financial Officer Richard Gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe budget plan for Storrs and the regional campuses presented a real challenge,\u201d said Gray. \u201cWe had to take some pretty pervasive actions to close our deficit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray noted that nearly all state agencies saw their budgets reduced this year, and that UConn \u201chad to be a part of the solution\u201d while minimizing the effect cuts would have on students. Cuts included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$7 million from Plant Renewal and Equipment<\/li>\n<li>$7.5 million from non-academic support services<\/li>\n<li>$10.2 million from Student Affairs<\/li>\n<li>$3.6 million from Athletics<\/li>\n<li>$4.0 million in technology funding<\/li>\n<li>$7.4 million in academic support<\/li>\n<li>$5.1 million from the general university budget<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The University was able to gain $10 million from fund balances around the University, and a modest 2.5 percent increase in tuition created $8.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>Gray also noted that the University instituted stringent hiring restrictions to keep personnel costs down.<\/p>\n<p>Both Gray and UConn President Susan Herbst identified the University\u2019s chief priority as being the expansion of the faculty, both to ensure that an adequate number of classes are offered and to enhance the University\u2019s research portfolio.
