(Pam Bali-Hoppi\/UConn Health Center Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 100 cars passed through the UConn Health Center\u2019s medication disposal program Saturday, leaving behind pills, patches, bottles and inhalers.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Drug Enforcement Administration\u2019s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the Health Center\u2019s was one of several dozen collection points throughout Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe preferred method to dispose of expired or no-longer needed medications is through incineration,\u201d says pharmacist John Dobbins, who organized the UConn Health Center collection. \u201cDisposing of meds this way will help keep our water clean and our streets safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A volunteer staff of 40, including 10 UConn pharmacy students and eight UConn nursing students ran a drive-through collection point in front of the Medical Arts and Research Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The tally included 279 prescriptions of controlled substances, amounting to 5,700 capsules, tablets or patches; 3.75 liters of liquid narcotics; 9 \u00bd pounds of inhalers; and 224 pounds of other medications, enough to fill three 55-gallon barrels.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49442\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2011-drug-takeback004.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49442  img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2011-drug-takeback004-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"It took three barrels to hold the medications that were not controlled substances, narcotics or inhalers.
