The University of Connecticut Foundation Inc. <\/a>has presented its first Foundation Philanthropy Award to Jim and Pat Calhoun to honor their extraordinary humanitarian and philanthropic efforts on behalf of the University of Connecticut.<\/p>\n

The Calhouns have supported cardiology research at the UConn Health Center since 1998 through generous personal gifts as well as the Jim Calhoun Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament and the Jim Calhoun Charity All-Star Basketball Game. Together these events have raised more than $5 million to benefit the Jim and Pat Calhoun Cardiology Research Endowment Fund, which provides significant resources annually for investigations into the causes of and new treatments for heart disease.<\/p>\n

UConn officials renamed the cardiology program at the Health Center, including all patient services, education, and research, the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center<\/a>, in recognition of their generosity and friendship.<\/p>\n

Additionally, in the past five years the Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride and Walk has raised more than $1 million for the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a> at the UConn Health Center.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough their commitment of time and resources, the Calhouns epitomize the highest ideals we associate with engaged and caring members of the community,\u201d said Dr. Peter Deckers, professor of surgery and dean emeritus of the UConn School of Medicine<\/a>, in presenting the award to Coach Calhoun from the Foundation.<\/p>\n
