(Chris DeFrancesco\/UConn Health Center Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new exhibit in the lobby of the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.uchc.edu\/\">L.M. Stowe Library<\/a> features artwork depicting varying perceptions of physicians, from serious to satirical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedical Imagery: Artistic Portrayals of Doctors and Surgeons,\u201d presented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.uchc.edu\/hms\/\">Hartford Medical Society<\/a> Historical Library, will be on display through April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea behind it is, there are lots of different ways doctors can be seen by society,\u201d says HMS librarian Jenny Miglus. \u201cEach panel has a different take, reflecting different facets of the way people see doctors or surgeons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One lithograph, categorized as \u201cromantic,\u201d depicts Oliver Wendell Holmes before the Boston Society for Medical Improvement in 1834 reading his essay \u201cThe Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever.\u201d Another, categorized as \u201ccomical,\u201d is a farcical portrayal of a physician using metallic rods known as \u201ctractors,\u201d an invention of Dr. Elisha Perkins, a Connecticut physician who in 1796 would be voted out of the Connecticut State Medical Society for peddling quack medicine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51487\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/historicpaintings3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51487 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/historicpaintings3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Under the category of \u201cirreverent,\u201d French caricaturist Adrien Barr\u00e8re\u2019s \u201cBottled Surgeons\u201d is among the artwork on display in the Health Center\u2019s L.M. (Chris DeFrancesco\/UConn Health Center Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Miglus created the exhibit with images, figurines and artifacts from the Hartford Medical Society\u2019s collection, which is housed at the UConn Health Center, in room LSB 016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach panel has a story that surrounds the work of art, and the figurines are lined up in a supporting role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Featured artists include Anna Mary Robertson \u201cGrandma\u201d Moses, Tompkins Harrison Matteson, Robert C.
