UConn&#039;s system of buoys provides weather data to the ocean-monitoring  network NERACOOS and tests water pollution levels in Long Island Sound.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Northeast ocean-monitoring network, including the University of Connecticut\u2019s marine sciences department, has been awarded $1.77 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration over the next year, and similar funding for the next four years. The grant will preserve remote sensing tracking of essential sea and atmospheric data for weather forecasting, fishermen, commercial shippers, and scientists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong other things, this network is routinely used for the national weather forecasting service,\u201d says marine sciences professor Jim O\u2019Donnell, who works as chair of the network\u2019s strategic planning committee. \u201cThis is what provides weather on the TV news every night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UConn\u2019s marine sciences department is a major player in the network, called the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (NERACOOS), providing faculty expertise and developing equipment used in Long Island Sound and along the East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks the 10th anniversary of UConn\u2019s system of buoys, which are deployed throughout Long Island Sound to measure such things as wind speed, currents, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient content of water.<\/p>\n<p>For the last three years, these buoys have been integrated into NERACOOS, whose monitoring extends from Connecticut through the coast of Maine and into Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52641\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52641\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy_clis-vertical.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52641 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy_clis-vertical-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"Buoy\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy_clis-vertical-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy_clis-vertical-313x420.jpg 313w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy_clis-vertical-74x100.jpg 74w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy_clis-vertical.jpg 373w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 223px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 223\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52641\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A UConn buoy. The buoys are widely used for research by faculty and students in marine sciences.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to providing weather data to NERACOOS, UConn\u2019s buoys are constantly testing water pollution levels. Sewage treatment plants throughout Connecticut have been undergoing upgrades over the past year in an effort to help clean degraded water in the Sound, and these buoys are essential to that effort, says O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data from the buoys is demonstrating that although sewage treatment plants are being upgraded, it\u2019s not solving the problem,\u201d says O\u2019Donnell. \u201cIt\u2019s not clear whether it\u2019s working as we expected.\u201d These data can help scientists hone their research to figure out what more can be done to restore the Sound.<\/p>\n<p>And the buoys create great opportunities for students and faculty in marine sciences.
