This week I was granted the honor of working with military veteran Andrew Lyon, who joined the Connecticut National Guard in high school. After spending two years at Central Connecticut State University, Andrew was deployed to Afghanistan where he stayed for ten months. He returned a year ago and began classes at UConn last semester. Since then, Andrew has been heavily involved with the Student Veterans Organization. He hopes to establish a Veteran Living Learning Community on campus, as well as implement free mental health services for UConn student vets. After graduation, Andrew wishes to pursue a career in psychology, where his main focus will be to assist veterans with their transition back into civilian society.

There are over 400 student veterans at UConn, some who were deployed, some who are retired, and others who are still serving. Most of the student vets have integrated themselves into regular campus life, making it almost impossible to identify these heroic citizens. However humble they may be, veterans at UConn and nationwide deserve to be appreciated. So whether you have a family full of veterans or only know one or two by acquaintance, share your gratitude with them. Facebook it, email it, or deliver the message personally. These courageous individuals did their part to serve us and our country, and for that they should be honored. Thank you veterans!

– If you want to be featured in One Student.
