{"id":55373,"date":"2012-02-22T16:14:57","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T21:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=55373"},"modified":"2014-01-17T08:42:59","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T13:42:59","slug":"tummy-troubles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/02\/tummy-troubles\/","title":{"rendered":"Tummy Troubles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders, yet people are embarrassed to talk about it.\u00a0 The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) impact one in five Americans.\u00a0 After a sore back and the common cold, it\u2019s the most common reason people call out sick and miss work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uconndocs.uchc.edu\/Home\/Physician?profileId=Birk-John\">Dr. John Birk<\/a>, chief of the <a href=\"http:\/\/gastroenterology.uchc.edu\/\">Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology<\/a> at the UConn Health Center, says the exact cause of IBS is not known but health experts believe it may be due to faulty communication between the brain and the intestinal tract. Dietary changes, exercise, stress management and medications can help with IBS symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cramping<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>Bloating<\/li>\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Potential Triggers of IBS Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eating<\/strong> (though no particular foods have been associated with IBS).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stress<\/strong> may affect the movements of the intestines and also may affect the way a person feels pain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trapped gas<\/strong> that causes bloating.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hormonal changes<\/strong>, such as during the menstrual cycle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Some medicines<\/strong>, such as antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genetics<\/strong>.
