This Thanksgiving I had a creative moment thinking about my former satirical (or maybe just more satirical) self before I became dean of CLAS. This is the result.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d never make fun of the provost,
\nHis wisdom and judgment are pure,
\nHe\u2019s far above humor and jest, boys,
\nI\u2019d like to keep my job secure.<\/p>\n

\nYou can orate, debate, and proclaim, boys,

The president\u2019s words are like honey,
\nHer vision inspires us all,
\nShe\u2019s out on the road raising money, but
\nShe could fire me with a phone call.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to be funny as dean, boys,
\nIt\u2019s hard to be funny as dean,
\nBetter keep counting those beans, boys,
\nIt\u2019s hard to be funny as dean.<\/p>\n

I work with the heads of departments,
\nOn budgets and staff we agree,
\nI\u2019ve nary a doubt of their talents,
\nThere are 20 of them and there\u2019s me.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to be funny as dean, boys,
\nIt\u2019s hard to be funny as dean,
\nYou need to inspire and lead, boys,
\nIt\u2019s hard to be funny as dean.<\/p>\n

The faculty\u2019s brilliance is legend,
\nTheir research earns worldwide respect,
\nWhatever they want I will give them,
\nI don\u2019t want to get them upset.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to be funny as dean, boys,

\nYou have to wear ties and speak wisely,

My deanship will someday expire,
\nTo the faculty I will ascend,
\nAnd then I\u2019ll be free to write satire,
\nAnd not be afraid to offend.<\/p>\n
