Kristof, co-author of &#039;Half the Sky,&#039; will speak on campus on April 19.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>On Thursday, April 19, noted <em>New York Times<\/em> columnist Nicholas D. Kristof, co-author of the nonfiction best-seller <em>Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide <\/em> (Knopf, 2009), will be on the Storrs campus to deliver a lecture to the University community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.halftheskymovement.org\/\"><em>Half the Sky<\/em><\/a> was named last year as the inaugural book selection for the UConn Reads program, a University-wide reading program launched in 2011 by President Susan Herbst. The UConn Reads program is intended to serve as a common reading experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the University, culminating in a variety of book discussions campus-wide and a major address, this year on April 19, by the author of the chosen book.<\/p>\n<p>The two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist has served as an op-ed columnist with <em>The<\/em> <em>New York Times<\/em> since 2001. He is an advocate for human rights and social justice. <em>Half<\/em> <em>the Sky<\/em> is a nonfiction account centering on the oppression of women and girls in the developing world.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn \u2013 who is also a co-author of <em>Half the Sky<\/em> \u2013 have written several other books, including <em>China Wakes: The Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power <\/em>(Vintage, 1995) and <em>Thunder from the East, Portrait of a Rising Asia<\/em> (Vintage, 2001).<\/p>\n<p>Kristof will speak on April 19 at 4 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre on the Storrs campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
