(Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Half the Sky<\/em> was named last year as the inaugural book selection for the program, culminating in a variety of book discussions campus-wide and a lecture by the author of the chosen book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReading enables us to come in contact with and, for a while, to inhabit the lives of others,\u201d Herbst said Thursday. \u201cAnd in the process, we gain a more complete understanding of ourselves as a people, greater empathy for people across the globe and more expansive insight into our world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has served as an op-ed columnist with <em>The New York Times <\/em>since 2001. He is an advocate for human rights and social justice. <em>Half the Sky<\/em> is a nonfiction account centering on the oppression of women and girls in the developing world.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn \u2013 who is also a co-author of <em>Half the Sky<\/em> \u2013 have written several other books, including <em>China Wakes: The Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power<\/em> (Vintage, 1995) and <em>Thunder from the East, Portrait of a Rising Asia<\/em> (Vintage, 2001).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58941\" style=\"width: 499px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Reads120419d187.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58941  img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Reads120419d187.jpg\" alt=\"Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times columnist and co-author of Half the Sky signs copies of the book after the first annual UConn Reads Author Event at the Student Union Theater on April 19, 2012.
