{"id":60280,"date":"2012-05-17T11:40:29","date_gmt":"2012-05-17T15:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=60280"},"modified":"2012-05-18T08:26:05","modified_gmt":"2012-05-18T12:26:05","slug":"uconn-health-center-hosts-free-huntington%e2%80%99s-disease-symposium-may-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/05\/uconn-health-center-hosts-free-huntington%e2%80%99s-disease-symposium-may-19\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Health Center Hosts Free Huntington\u2019s Disease Symposium May 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-bottom: 18px\">[yframe url=&#8217;http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qUkYeZXuMYY&amp;feature=youtu.be&#8217;]<\/div>\n<p>In observance of Huntington\u2019s Disease Awareness Month, the UConn Health Center is hosting a free symposium on Saturday, May 19 for caregivers, family members and patients.<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie Hennig, a clinical therapist for the <a href=\"http:\/\/psychiatry.uchc.edu\/huntingtons\/\">Huntington\u2019s Disease Program<\/a> at the Health Center, says the condition causes parts of the brain to degenerate and effects three areas of functioning (the 3 M\u2019s):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mood<\/li>\n<li>Memory<\/li>\n<li>Movements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The symptoms typically appear in mid-life (30 to 50 year old). The symptoms can be treated but the disease is eventually fatal.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every child born to someone who has HD, has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene that causes HD<\/li>\n<li>If a child does not inherit the gene, they will not get the disease<\/li>\n<li>If a person has inherited the gene, they will eventually develop symptoms of HD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Health Center has a five-day-a-week, free clinic located at the Farmington campus. It provides genetic counseling, gene testing, treatment of symptoms, and patient\/family support.
