{"id":60355,"date":"2012-05-22T09:40:45","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T13:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=60355"},"modified":"2012-05-25T14:20:01","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T18:20:01","slug":"uconn-law-school-graduates-urged-to-use-law-to-benefit-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/05\/uconn-law-school-graduates-urged-to-use-law-to-benefit-society\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Law School Graduates Urged to Use Law to Benefit Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Graduates from more than 20 countries have received their degrees from the University of Connecticut\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.uconn.edu\/\">School of Law<\/a>, where civil rights leader and U.S. Congressman John Lewis from Georgia&#8217;s 5th district urged them to use law to lift society to a higher plane.<\/p>\n<p>The Law School\u2019s commencement Sunday drew more than 2,000 people to its Hartford campus, where 240 students received Juris Doctor degrees or Master of Laws degrees in insurance law or U.S. legal studies.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. He led the 1965 march in Selma, Ala., for voting rights; was a peer and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and was a keynote speaker at the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis, whose activism has been marked by nonviolent resistance, says his mother warned him when he was young to avoid trouble \u2013 but that he hopes the law students, like himself and others, will recognize their responsibility to get into what he calls \u201cgood trouble, necessary trouble, important trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake a deep breath and take it all in,\u201d he told the graduates, \u201cbut tomorrow you must roll up your sleeves because the world is waiting for talented young men and women to lead it to a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students are dispersing to jobs and homes around the world, including many who have secured jobs in Connecticut. Joshua Hershman of Woodbridge, who received his J.D. degree, is joining his father, Peter Hershman \u201972 (LAW), in his New Haven legal practice and considering becoming a public defender if a position becomes available.<\/p>\n<p>Joshua Hershman was among many new graduates who received their ceremonial \u201chooding\u201d during the commencement from their parents or other relatives who are UConn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.uconn.edu\/alumni\">School of Law alumni<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an exciting day for all of us.
