\"2012<\/a>The leading Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joe Lieberman will debate at the University of Connecticut\u2019s Storrs campus on June 14 at noon.<\/p>\n

The hour-long debate between Linda McMahon and Chris Shays will be streamed live on\u00a0 Courant.com<\/a> and CTnow.com<\/a> and can be seen again on FOX CT at 7 p.m. The debate is sponsored by the Hartford Courant and FOX CT.<\/p>\n

The debate will take place at von der Mehden Recital Hall. A limited number of seats for the debate will be available to the UConn community only.<\/p>\n

McMahon won the state GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate when she captured 60 percent of the votes at the party\u2019s nominating convention on May 18. Former U.S. Rep. Shays earned 32 percent of the endorsement votes, more than double the amount required to force a GOP primary on Aug. 14.<\/p>\n

This is the second U.S. Senate debate to take place in Storrs this year. In April, Democratic candidates Susan Bysiewicz, Chris Murphy, Matthew Oakes, William Tong, and Lee Whitnum participated in a separate debate sponsored by the Courant and FOX CT.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the state\u2019s flagship public university, UConn needs to be front and center when it comes to discussions about politics and public policy in Connecticut,\u201d said UConn President Susan Herbst, whose academic field is political science and communications. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to be hosting this debate and are looking forward to hosting the candidates on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rich Graziano, vice president and general manager of FOX CT\/WCCT-TV and publisher, president & CEO of the Hartford Courant, said, \u201cDebates are important to the political process. It is our role to inform society, and this is one of the many ways that we try to help voters assess candidates for office. We are honored to be holding Senate debates with the University of Connecticut.”<\/p>\n

\nYou must be a UConn student, faculty, or staff member.
\nYou must register with the Office of University Events by June 13.

\nNames will be checked at the door. If you do not register, you will not be allowed into the venue.
\nIf there is a question you would like to have asked as part of the debate, please send it to opinion@courant.com<\/a> by June 13 for consideration.<\/p>\n

Audience seats will be available to UConn students, faculty, and staff only <\/strong>on June 14. Seating at the event is limited and will be decided on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n

All members of the audience must be in their seats at least 20 minutes before the debate starts, and must remain in their seats until the event ends.<\/p>\n

Since the debate is being taped for television, audience members must abide by specific ground rules. These rules of attendance \u2013 outlined below \u2013 will be strictly enforced. Anyone not complying with the rules of the event will not be able to attend.<\/p>\n
