{"id":61421,"date":"2012-06-14T14:32:42","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T18:32:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=61421"},"modified":"2012-06-20T10:41:41","modified_gmt":"2012-06-20T14:41:41","slug":"republican-candidates-for-u-s-senate-square-off-in-uconn-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/06\/republican-candidates-for-u-s-senate-square-off-in-uconn-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Republican Candidates for U.S. Senate Square Off in UConn Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The two leading Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut \u2013 Linda McMahon and Chris Shays \u2013 squared off in a major campaign political debate Thursday at the von der Mehden Recital Hall on UConn\u2019s Storrs campus.<\/p>\n<p>The two candidates fielded questions about the  economy, job creation in Connecticut, the crisis in Syria, women&#8217;s  reproductive rights, and more during the hour-long debate, which was sponsored by The Hartford Courant and FOX CT.<\/p>\n<p>The debate can be seen on FOX CT at 7 p.m. today, June 14.<\/p>\n<p>Shays and McMahon are vying for the seat being vacated by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I), who is not seeking re-election after serving four terms.<\/p>\n<p>McMahon won the state GOP nomination last month when she captured 60 percent of the votes at the party\u2019s annual nominating convention. Former U.S. Rep. In April, Democratic candidates Susan Bysiewicz, Chris Murphy, Matthew Oakes, William Tong and Lee Whitnum participated in a separate debate sponsored by the Courant and FOX CT.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy, who currently represents Connecticut as the state\u2019s U.S. Representative for the 5th District, earned his party\u2019s nomination at the state Democratic convention in May.
