{"id":64451,"date":"2012-08-20T16:19:57","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T20:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=64451"},"modified":"2012-08-21T08:32:41","modified_gmt":"2012-08-21T12:32:41","slug":"health-center-welcomes-medical-dental-classes-of-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/08\/health-center-welcomes-medical-dental-classes-of-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Center Welcomes Medical, Dental Classes of 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-bottom: 18px\">[flickr-gallery id=&#8221;72157631163975944&#8243;]<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a rite of passage for first-year medical and dental students, symbolic of their joining the professions for which they will spend the next four years training.<\/p>\n<p>The students making up the Classes of 2016 were welcomed into the <a href=\"http:\/\/medicine.uchc.edu\/\">UConn School of Medicine<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sdm.uchc.edu\/\">UConn School of Dental Medicine<\/a> at the schools\u2019 traditional White Coat Ceremonies, where 40 dental and 90 medical students received their white coats and recited either the Dentist\u2019s Pledge or the Hippocratic Oath.<\/p>\n<p>It was Dr. Frank Torti\u2019s first White Coat Ceremony as dean of the UConn School of Medicine. In his remarks to the students, he spoke of the transformation <a href=\"http:\/\/biosciencect.uchc.edu\/\">Bioscience Connecticut<\/a> will bring to the Health Center, and to the future of medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good part is going to be the extraordinary environment that we will create to make this place the place that is actually is going to push the envelope in terms of care and cure of patients,\u201d Torti said. \u201cWhat we are aiming to achieve is not new buildings, but it is the innovation, the extraordinary bringing together of the brightest people, and actually change the face of medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The medical students\u2019 white coats were adorned with a gold lapel pin from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a symbol of humanism in medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Monty MacNeil, dean of the UConn School of Dental Medicine, told his first-year students, the White Coat Ceremony has little to do with the garment itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it has to do with is what\u2019s inside the white coat: you, your development as a health professional, and how the white coat fits you in those things other than the physical\u2014professionalism, ethics, caring, compassion,\u201d MacNeil said. \u201cAnd you know what?
