Urban Service Track Students Win Primary Care Awards<\/h2>\n

At the 5th<\/sup> Annual Primary Care Summit hosted by the Connecticut Center for Primary Care (CCPC), two Urban Service Track (UST) members received the 2012 Primary Care Leadership Awards.<\/p>\n

The student recipient included Katherine \u201cKate\u201d Kubler, a fourth-year medical student at the UConn School of Medicine. In her four years with UST Kubler led numerous service activities in urban underserved communities, developed the UST mentoring program and developed an enrichment project focusing on characterizing the formal and informal mentoring components within the UST.<\/p>\n

The faculty recipient is Dr. Kenia Mansilla-Rivera, UST faculty director of the Family Medicine Clerkship for third-year students, assistant professor at the UConn Department of Family Medicine, and physician at the Family Medicine Center at Asylum Hill. Mansilla-Rivera provides instruction, program assessment and evaluation, as well as curriculum development specifically aimed at enhancing UST scholars\u2019 knowledge and skill working with urban underserved communities. Most recently, Mansilla-Rivera worked with colleagues out of Dental Medicine and Pharmacy to develop curriculum for an on-line tool kit to strengthen student clinical and communication skills.<\/p>\n

Guerrera Awarded Hospice Education Institute Grant<\/h2>\n

Dr. Mary P. Guerrera, professor of family medicine,\u00a0was awarded a grant from the Hospice Education Institute to support the Healer\u2019s Art \u2013 Awakening the Heart of Medicine<\/em> course she directs\u00a0at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

Community Leadership Recognition to Urban Service Track Scholar<\/h2>\n

At the Central Area Health Education Center <\/a>(AHEC) annual meeting, a UConn health profession student received the 2012 Bruce Gould Leadership Award. This award is given to individuals who inspire peer participation, develop innovative projects that impact the Hartford community and help increase the awareness of AHEC with peers and in the community.<\/p>\n

Shawnet Jones, a fourth-year student at the UConn School of Medicine and Urban Service Track (UST) Scholar, received the 2012 Community Leadership Award. Jones works weekly at her student continuity practice site at the Family Medicine Center at Asylum Hill where she sees patients from the immediate Hartford community. As an UST Scholar, Jones has led other students in numerous outreach activities in urban, underserved areas. After residency, Jones plans to pursue a career in family medicine serving her home base of Hartford\/Bloomfield.<\/p>\n
