Fourth-year students at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine celebrated a successful Match Day on March 15 with 94.8 percent of them securing residencies through the National Residency Match Program. The national average was 93.7 percent this year.<\/p>\n

Dr. David Henderson, associate dean of medical student affairs, told the students, \u201cThis is a most excellent Match Day. Our students matched into some of the most competitive programs at some of the most prestigious medical institutions in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

As in years past, a large percentage of UConn students, 43 percent, matched in a primary care residency program which includes internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics.<\/p>\n

Radiology, psychiatry, and anesthesiology were the top programs for the remaining 57 percent of students. Henderson said for the first time in the same year, UConn had students match in three extremely competitive programs – plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and orthopaedic surgery.<\/p>\n

The majority of the class, 58 of the 74 students, will stay in the Northeast, with 25 remaining in Connecticut.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe students worked really hard and accomplished a lot these past several years and we\u2019re very pleased with the results,\u201d added Henderson.<\/p>\n

Match Day is conducted annually at medical schools across the country to match students with residency programs and fill the available training positions at teaching hospitals around the country.<\/p>\n
