Photo by Dylan Seamus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since arriving on campus, President Michael Hogan has encouraged the University community to give back by supporting local charities through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csec.uconn.edu\/\">Connecticut State Employees\u2019 Charitable Campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoon it will be Thanksgiving, a day when those of us among the \u2018haves\u2019 may relish or complain about the hours spent cooking to provide the holiday feast,\u201d says Hogan. \u201cBut there are many in our own neighborhoods who are dependent on the generosity of others for even the simplest meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2009 Connecticut State Employees\u2019 Charitable Campaign began in October. Since then, about 400 people who work at UConn\u2019s main campus in Storrs have pledged more than $112,000 \u2013 100 employees short of the participation goal.\u00a0 If employees contributed just $1 per pay period, the Storrs community would be able to provide crucial assistance to UConn neighbors in need of help.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s assistance is not just financial. Community Outreach students currently volunteer at four organizations that are among the Top 12 agencies that Storrs faculty and staff supported in the 2008 Employees\u2019 Campaign for Charitable Giving.\u00a0 The four are:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/site.foodshare.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=index\">Food Share<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/waimct.org\/\">Windham Area Interfaith Ministry<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.covenantsoupkitchen.org\/index.cfm\">Covenant Soup Kitchen<\/a>; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windhamhabitat.org\/\">Windham Habitat for Humanity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s great that students work directly with a third of the top 12 agencies that employees support.\u00a0 It shows a true connection between where faculty and staff give money and the places where students donate time,\u201d says Stefanie Landsman, Storrs coordinator for the \u201909 Employees\u2019 Campaign.\u00a0 \u201cIt reinforces that UConn gives back to our local community.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6939\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6939\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1OffYerRocker031_lg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6939 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"Off Yer Rockers performs at the UConn Co-op\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1OffYerRocker031_lg-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"&lt;p&gt;Sociology Professor Davita Silfen Glasberg performs with Off Yer Rockers at the UConn Co-op. Photo by Frank Dahlmeyer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hogan demonstrated his support for the local community this month by joining students in collecting food from UConn Dining Services and then delivering and serving it at Willimantic\u2019s Covenant Soup Kitchen.\u00a0 The local soup kitchen received the sixth highest number of donations from Storrs employees and appears to be among the campus\u2019s favorite local charities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCovenant Soup Kitchen has a strong network of supporters and advocates, as well as name recognition,\u201d says Matthew Farley, director of UConn&#8217;s Office of Community Outreach. \u201cThe staff there are good to work with; they collaborate well and often become the recipient of multiple efforts from UConn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>November fundraisers to benefit this area social service agency included a concert performance by Off Yer Rockers, UConn\u2019s faculty rock band, at the UConn Co-op.\u00a0 Flyers encouraged listeners to bring some cash to drop in the donation box.
