Editor\u2019s Corner is a new series in which we will profile top journals edited by our faculty members.<\/p>\n

Today, we are pleased to highlight the Journal of Materials Science<\/a><\/em>, published by Springer.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Editorial information:<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. C. Barry Carter<\/strong>, Department Head and professor in the Department of Chemical, Materials & Biomolecular Engineering (CMBE) at UConn, serves as journal\u2019s fourth Editor-in-Chief.\u00a0 Three other engineering faculty members from the CMBE Department, Drs. Mark Aindow, Christopher Cornelius and Pamir Alpay, are also actively engaged with the journal. Dr. Aindow is one of two Deputy Editors-in-Chief; Drs. Alpay and Cornelius are two of the 14 Editors.<\/p>\n

Current Impact Factor:<\/em>\u00a0 1.855<\/strong><\/p>\n

Journal Content:<\/em> The Journal of Materials Science<\/em> publishes reviews, full-length papers, and short communications recording original research results on, or techniques for studying the relationship between structure, properties, and uses of materials. The subjects are seen from international and interdisciplinary \"\"<\/a>perspectives covering areas including metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, electrical materials, composite materials, fibers, nanostructured materials, nanocomposites, and biological and biomedical materials.<\/p>\n

Details:\u00a0 Dr. Carter notes that the Journal of Materials Science<\/em> was founded in 1964 and is one of the largest and best known journals in the field of materials science and engineering. It currently publishes approximately 850 papers each year and has an acceptance rate of less than 20%.<\/p>\n

Currently celebrating its 45th<\/sup> year, this top journal will award the $10,000 Sapphire Prize for Best Paper published in 2011 at a reception at the Materials Research Society\u2019s Fall Meeting in Boston, November 28 – December 2, 2011.<\/p>\n

Dr. Carter was named a co-Editor-in-Chief in 2004. Since the installation of an electronic submission process that year, the number of submissions has exploded.\u00a0 Since 2005, the Impact Factor has increased by 106%, with a 2008-09 jump of 24% and a 2009-10 increase of 26%. \u00a0Dr. Carter notes that in the last year, the journal received over 26,000 citations, with more than 50,000 paper downloads from the publisher’s website each week.<\/p>\n
