{"id":78020,"date":"2013-05-12T16:42:32","date_gmt":"2013-05-12T20:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=78020"},"modified":"2023-06-27T13:12:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T17:12:51","slug":"commencement-weekend-2013-the-numbers-and-the-students-are-impressive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2013\/05\/commencement-weekend-2013-the-numbers-and-the-students-are-impressive\/","title":{"rendered":"Commencement Weekend 2013: The Numbers \u2013 and the Students \u2013 are Impressive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commencement weekend in Storrs is a time where achievement is recognized; where nostalgia competes with anticipation; where the word \u2018student\u2019 is replaced by the word \u2018graduate;\u2019 and graduates are welcomed into the fold of more than 225,000 UConn alumni worldwide.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sidebar\" style=\"float: right; w33;margin: 9px 0 9px 9px; padding: 12px; background-color: #d8e6fc; border: 1px solid #002663;\"><b>Commencement Statistics<\/b><br \/>\nThis year, UConn will award nearly 8,000 degrees:<br \/>\n5,575 Bachelor\u2019s<br \/>\n1,500 Master\u2019s<br \/>\n350 Doctor of Philosophy<br \/>\n204 Juris Doctor<br \/>\n94 Doctor of Pharmacy<br \/>\n77 Doctor of Medicine<br \/>\n37 Master of Laws<br \/>\n35 Doctor of Dental Medicine<br \/>\n24 Doctor of Physical Therapy<br \/>\n5 Doctor of Audiology<br \/>\n4 Doctor of Musical Arts<br \/>\n3 Doctor of Education<br \/>\n2 Doctor of Nursing Practice<br \/>\n<em>Also<\/em><br \/>\n45 Diplomas in Professional Education<br \/>\n24 Associate\u2019s Degrees\/<br \/>\nRatcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture<\/div>\n<p>At 12 different ceremonies held on Saturday and Sunday, members of the University\u2019s undergraduate class of 2013 \u2013 nearly 5,600 out of a total number of almost 8,000 receiving degrees \u2013 were reminded that they had been officially welcomed to campus on Aug. 31, 2009 at convocation ceremonies where they were promised an exciting journey on their march toward commencement.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend, those same students completed that march and received diplomas in fields as diverse as biology, journalism, plant science, nursing, English, psychology, dramatic arts, education, and history, to name a few. Graduate students celebrated degrees in numerous disciplines including pharmacy, social work, engineering, business, the sciences, humanities, and fine arts.<\/p>\n<p><b>Class of \u201913 excels at outreach, community service<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Matthew Farley, associate director for community outreach in the Department of Student Activities, says the Class of \u201913 has been one of the most engaged classes in terms of service in the history of UConn. \u201cWe\u2019re still adding up the numbers for this year, but to give you an idea of the level of commitment,\u201d he says, \u201cduring the 2011-1212 year, UConn students in total committed 1.4 million hours to service; I expect this year will equal or surpass that figure once everything has been reported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farley says that during the past four years, Community Outreach has seen a 22 percent increase in service hours and a 23 percent increase in the number of organizations the University partners with in outreach programs. (Ariel Dowski &#8217;14 (CLAS)\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Included among the many <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2013\/03\/outstanding-students-in-the-class-of-2013\/\">outstanding students<\/a> in the Class of \u201913 are 306 Honors Scholars, one of the largest Honors cohorts ever; a Goldwater Scholarship recipient; three winners of NSF graduate fellowships; athletes who have risen to the top of their chosen sports; and musicians who have written and performed original works. (Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Importance of High Impact Practices<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gary Lewicki, assistant vice president of enrollment planning &amp; management, points to these accomplishments as being central to UConn\u2019s commitment to High Impact Practices, a program endorsed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities that stresses the importance of first-year seminars and experiences, learning communities, writing-intensive courses, collaborative projects, undergraduate research, diversity\/global learning, service learning, internships, and capstone courses and projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are always proud of our students and what they achieve in the classroom,\u201d Lewicki says, \u201cbut it\u2019s important to realize that there are experiences that will transcend a person\u2019s GPA. We know that when students study abroad, or work for Habitat for Humanity, or participate in living and learning communities, they are becoming well-rounded, productive citizens. They are ready for whatever the future brings \u2013 whether that\u2019s graduate school or employment or some sort of volunteer service. Among other noteworthy accomplishments, the Class of \u201913 has been impressively represented at the spring ritual known as OOzeball; it has launched careers in karaoke and lip synching; and it will be permanently honored at the Dairy Bar by \u2018Mirror Lake Mint\u2019 \u2013 the \u00a0Class of 2013 Senior Scoop winning flavor consisting of mint ice cream with crumbled Oreos and fudge swirl.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Teitelbaum, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, captures the essence of the weekend: &#8220;Commencement is one of the best times on the academic calendar. It&#8217;s a rite of passage celebrating the many achievements of the Class of 2013 and the support of their friends and families. Everyone involved is in a great mood \u2013 there&#8217;s just no downside to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Immelt,\u00a0chairman and chief executive officer of General Electric Corp., addresses the Graduate School commencement ceremony:<\/p>\n<p>[yframe url=&#8217;http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8rHWQXG38Oc&amp;feature=youtu.be&#8217;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the majority of degrees were bestowed in Storrs this weekend, the University looks forward to separate ceremonies for graduates of the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine on Monday, May 13, and graduates of the School of Law on Sunday, May 19.
