(Photo by Ethan Talbot)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For an eighth year, a team of students fresh out of their first year will carry on the annual UConn School of Medicine tradition of pedaling across the country to raise money for leukemia research.<\/p>\n<p>This year, it\u2019s a team of two, and one of them is a dental student.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Beauvais and Patrick Field didn\u2019t know each other when they individually expressed interest in being part of Coast to Coast for a Cure, the fundraising ride <a href=\"http:\/\/medicine.uchc.edu\/spotlight\/spotlight06\/bikers.html\">started by two UConn medical students in 2006<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now they\u2019ll spend nearly the whole summer together, cycling about 4,000 miles over nearly two months. Their bikes are provided by the Hartford nonprofit <a href=\"http:\/\/leasfoundation.org\/events\/\">Lea\u2019s Foundation for Leukemia Research<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.uchc.edu\/treatment\/services\/hematologic.html\">philanthropic supporter of UConn\u2019s Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a> and the ride\u2019s beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pretty excited for the unknown,\u201d says Field, who graduated from UConn last year with a double major in chemistry and molecular cell biology. \u201cI had heard about this trip while in Storrs and I made up my mind then that if I end up at UConn for medical school, I was doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beauvais, who would be the first student from the UConn School of Dental Medicine to complete the trip, says, \u201cI heard about it at the beginning of the year, and it sounded like the perfect way to spend my last free summer. I\u2019ve always wanted to see the country; what better way to do it than by bike while supporting such a great foundation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[soundcloud url=&#8221;http:\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/98407162&#8243; params=&#8221;&#8221; width=&#8221; 100%&#8221; height=&#8221;166&#8243; iframe=&#8221;true&#8221; \/]<\/p>\n<p>Both students describe themselves as physically active and say the longest bike trip they\u2019ve taken was about 50 miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have to do more than that every day,\u201d Field says. \u201cBut we\u2019re looking forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They leave for San Francisco\u2014by plane\u2014June 12. They\u2019ll assemble their bikes at the airport, make their way to the shore, and dip their tires in the Pacific Ocean to officially begin riding coast to coast. Along the way they\u2019ll post updates and photos at <a href=\"http:\/\/coasttocoastforacure2013.blogspot.com\">http:\/\/coasttocoastforacure2013.blogspot.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of riders on the Coast to Coast for a Cure team has varied over the years.
