(Bret Eckhardt\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i>Sierra<\/i> magazine\u2019s editors lauded UConn for a wide <a href=\"http:\/\/ecohusky.uconn.edu\/about\/initiatives.html\">variety of initiatives<\/a>, including offering more than 600 classes relating to sustainability; reducing water use by 15 percent since 2005; and serving a large amount of locally sourced food in its dining facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The new <i>Sierra<\/i> honor comes in the same year that UConn topped 215 universities worldwide to win the No. 1 spot on Universitas Indonesia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2013\/01\/uconn-earns-top-score-in-third-annual-greenmetric-world-ranking\/\">GreenMetric World Ranking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUConn\u2019s commitment to environmental sustainability is a core part of fulfilling our mission as a land and sea grant university,\u201d UConn President Susan Herbst says. \u201cWhile we\u2019re immensely honored to be included in these rankings, we know that our work is not done. (Sean Flynn\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNo student should leave here, degree in hand, without a deep sense of responsibility for the protection of the planet,\u201d she adds. \u201cIt is part of being a good citizen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UConn, which was ranked No. 5 last year, has been singled out in recent years for advances in on-campus recycling programs, which recycle and reuse everything from food and landscaping waste to consumer goods such as used sneakers, appliances, and electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Some of UConn\u2019s other high-impact environmental initiatives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This year\u2019s opening of UConn\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2013\/07\/uconn-deep-officials-celebrate-opening-of-water-reclamation-facility\/\">reclaimed water facility<\/a>, the first of its kind in the region. (Sean Flynn\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>A curriculum that strongly supports the University\u2019s \u201cgreen\u201d mission through a bachelor\u2019s degree program in environmental studies and more than 600 courses with an environmental and sustainability focus, in areas ranging from engineering to law.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGreen\u201d construction initiatives such as rain gardens, green roofs, and porous paving materials. Those building features help manage stormwater runoff and improve water quality in nearby rivers and streams. Likens<\/a>, whose work to identify and research acid rain has placed him among the world\u2019s most eminent climate researchers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rich Miller, director of UConn\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/ecohusky.uconn.edu\/\">Office of Environmental Policy<\/a>, says the University\u2019s sustainability successes are a result of initiatives and collaborations across many departments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time the University is ranked No. 1 nationally in any endeavor, it requires strong leadership and teamwork, and we\u2019ve had both,\u201d Miller says. \u201cThe commitment to the environment and sustainability starts at the top and runs deep at UConn with faculty, staff, and students.
