(Jeff Gonci\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UConn officials, students, and leaders from throughout southeastern Conn. are celebrating the opening of a new student center at the University\u2019s shoreline <a href=\"http:\/\/www.averypoint.uconn.edu\/\">Avery Point<\/a> campus.<\/p>\n<p>The student center, which includes an auditorium, was completed this summer and opened to the public at a ceremony Wednesday before a crowd of UConn students and employees, regional business and community leaders, and other guests.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the renovation of the 300-seat auditorium \u2013 originally built in the 1940s by the U.S. Coast Guard \u2013 the $9.6 million project also included the addition of an expanded dining facility, study areas, lounges, and other amenities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opening of a brand-new student center at Avery Point gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the nature of student life at a great university,\u201d President Susan Herbst says, noting that a well-rounded education involves more than taking courses and pursuing a major.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe construction of a first-rate student center \u2013 with a performance venue, a lounge and game room, and other features, will go a long way toward providing our students with the essential experience of being immersed in university life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Herbst added that being a student is an opportunity to try new things, forge new friendships, and develop new interests, all of which are fostered by the presence of a center with the services and space to fit their needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur new student center will serve as a dramatic<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82598\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82598\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82598 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center3-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"Honored guests began gathering at the student center just prior to its dedication on August 23, 2013 (Jeff Gonci\/UConn Photo)\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center3-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center3-352x420.jpg 352w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center3-84x100.jpg 84w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center3.jpg 420w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 252px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 252\/300;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Honored guests began gathering at the student center just prior to its dedication on August 23, 2013 (Jeff Gonci\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>new gateway to the campus and social hub for our vibrant campus community,&#8221; adds Michael Alfultis, Avery Point&#8217;s campus director.<\/p>\n<p>Ronald Tardiff, a sophomore from Preston who is president of the Associated Student Government at Avery Point, says the center will be well-used for studying, dining, recreation, student organization gatherings, and other events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As as student and a student leader, I&#8217;m very impressed by UConn&#8217;s responsiveness to students&#8217; concerns and the commitment to making Avery Point a campus that people are excited to come to,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, students started using the center within the first few minutes that it was open, checking out the theater and challenging each other to matches on the ping-pong and pool tables in the new game room.<\/p>\n<p>The center is the first new construction project in a decade at the campus, which UConn<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82597\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82597 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/AveryPoint-Center2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The Department of Dining Services will provide tasty and nutritious food in the new student center. Before that, it was formerly the summer estate of Morton Plant, a railroad, steamship, and hotel magnate.<\/p>\n<p>Although the student center is the first new construction at Avery Point in recent years, the campus has undergone major transformations as a result of $50 million in renovations and additions under the <a href=\"http:\/\/uc2000.uconn.edu\/\">UConn 2000<\/a> infrastructure improvement program.<\/p>\n<p>These included updates to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinesciences.uconn.edu\/\">Marine Sciences<\/a> and technology facilities, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.branford.uconn.edu\/history.htm\">Branford House<\/a>, the gym, classrooms in the Academic Building, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceanology.org\/\">Project Oceanology<\/a> building, and new landscaping.
