{"id":8255,"date":"2009-12-16T12:40:53","date_gmt":"2009-12-16T16:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=8255"},"modified":"2011-05-31T12:40:11","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T16:40:11","slug":"researchers-discover-biological-basis-of-%e2%80%98bacterial-immune-system%e2%80%99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2009\/12\/researchers-discover-biological-basis-of-%e2%80%98bacterial-immune-system%e2%80%99\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Discover Biological Basis of \u2018Bacterial Immune System\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A paper co-authored by <a href=\"http:\/\/grad.uchc.edu\/faculty\/bios\/graveley.html\">Brenton Graveley<\/a>, associate professor of genetics and developmental biology, is published in the current issue of the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/fulltext\/S0092-8674%2809%2900977-5\"><em>Cell.<\/em><\/a> The article is one of the first containing data generated by the Health Center\u2019s powerful Illumina Genome Analyzer.<\/p>\n<p>Bacteria don&#8217;t have easy lives. In addition to mammalian immune systems that besiege the bugs, they have natural enemies called bacteriophages, viruses that kill half the bacteria on Earth every two days.<\/p>\n<p>Still, bacteria and another class of microorganisms called archaea survive in part because they have a built-in defense system that helps protect them from many viruses and other invaders.<\/p>\n<p>The team of researchers discovered how this bacterial defense system works, and it could lead to new classes of targeted antibiotics, new tools to study gene function in micro-organisms and more stable bacterial cultures used by food and biotechnology industries to make products such as yogurt and cheese.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/today.uchc.edu\/pdfs\/cell_rna.pdf\">View an Abstract of the Article<\/a> (PDF)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Graveley, who oversees the Health Center\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/genetics.uchc.edu\/TG\/Welcome.html\">Translational Genomics Core<\/a>, also had a paper published recently in the journal <em>RNA<\/em> and he predicts these articles are only the vanguard. That\u2019s because the Illumina sequencer, acquired little more than a year ago, has already been used by Graveley\u2019s team to generate over 125 billion bases of sequence, more than 40 times the size of the human genome.
