(Sarah Turker\/UConn Health Center Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cResearch is core to economic development and innovation throughout the world,\u201d said Esty, who serves on the Committee on Science, Space and Technology. The 5th Congressional District includes Farmington and many surrounding towns.<\/p>\n<p>In a roundtable discussion before the tour, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchc.edu\/about\/vicepresident\/index.html\">Dr. Frank M. Torti<\/a>, the Health Center\u2019s executive vice president for health affairs and dean of the UConn School of Medicine, spoke of the Health Center\u2019s vision and newly defined goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur vision is to become a regionally and nationally prominent provider in a few well chosen areas of distinction and leverage our research strengths to pursue new treatments and cures for our patients \u2013 who are the focus of everything we do,\u201d Torti added.<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate the power of translational research, <a href=\"http:\/\/immune.uchc.edu\/faculty_research\/faculty_profiles\/vella.html\">Anthony Vella<\/a>, of the Department of Immunology, presented an overview about team approaches to understand the role of inflammation in triggering immune responses to serious conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. <a href=\"http:\/\/cvb.uchc.edu\/research\/claffey\/index.html\">Kevin Claffey<\/a>, professor of cell biology, presented an overview of encouraging research that may ultimately help identify individualized, effective treatments for women with breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the discussion and tour, Esty met with <a href=\"http:\/\/heart.uchc.edu\/physicians\/bios\/lahey.html\">Dr. Stephen J.
