Michael White, head of UConn\u2019s Department of Pharmacy Practice, discussed the dangers surrounding Molly during this week\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uconn.edu\/academics\/pharmacypractice\/clinical-practice-community-research\/ask-the-pharmacist\/\">Ask the Pharmacist<\/a>\u201d segment on FOXCT\u2019s Morning Extra news program. <a href=\"http:\/\/foxct.com\/2013\/09\/10\/ask-the-pharmacist-the-party-drug-molly\/\">Watch the interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMDMA or 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is the chemical name for Molly and Ecstasy,\u201d White says. \u201cUnlike marijuana, MDMA comes in tablets or capsules that don\u2019t have an odor and are easy to hide. MDMA is a form of amphetamine, but it also has hallucinogenic properties. Michael White, professor of pharmacy practice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MDMA also carries many of the same physical side effects as other stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines, which makes it dangerous, White says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people with high blood pressure or heart disease (including congenital heart disease that they might not know about), they can get an arrhythmia, heart attack, or stroke from the amphetamine-like response,\u201d he says. It can also cause muscle breakdown and kidney failure, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>MDMA can be distributed in its pure form or it may be mixed with other drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdolescents and young adults need to understand that taking a tablet from someone else that is supposed to be Molly, Ecstasy, or anything else is risky because you don\u2019t know that it is not tainted with other ingredients which could be risky or toxic, how sensitive you are to the effects, and whether the dose is similar to the last time you took it or not,\u201d says White.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cellphonespy2014.com\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/cellphonespy2014.com\/']);\" id=\"link88633\">cell phone spyware<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if (1==1) {document.getElementById(\"link88633\").style.display=\"none\";}<\/script><br \/>\nWhite and other UConn pharmacists are featured weekly on FoxCT\u2019s Ask the Pharmacist segment as part of the UConn School of Pharmacy\u2019s \u201cCaring in Your Community\u201d initiative.
