{"id":89332,"date":"2014-02-10T09:00:31","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T14:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=89332"},"modified":"2014-02-11T09:48:12","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T14:48:12","slug":"live-well-program-comes-to-uconn-health-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2014\/02\/live-well-program-comes-to-uconn-health-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Live Well Program Comes to UConn Health Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many individuals find it difficult to manage both the physical and emotional symptoms associated with a chronic illness. However, experts agree that living a full and meaningful life shouldn\u2019t be compromised due to health issues.<\/p>\n<p>The Live Well Program is a six-week workshop series that teaches real-life skills for living a full, healthy life with a chronic condition such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, sickle cell disease or chronic pain.<\/p>\n<p>The first Live Well workshop series will begin on Thursday, Feb. 20 and occur each Thursday through March 27. The workshops will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center Conference Room, UConn Health Center, Farmington.<\/p>\n<p>The nationwide evidence-based health promotion program was developed by Stanford University. Sessions are fun and very interactive. Participants share their successes and build a common source of support. The workshop builds confidence around managing health, staying active, and enjoying life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLive Well workshops meet weekly for six weeks for 2\u00bd hours a week and are facilitated by two specially trained leaders. Workshops cover new topics each week and provide opportunities for interaction and group problem solving,\u201d says facilitator Teresa Works, a licensed clinical social worker at UConn\u2019s Adult Sickle Cell Center.<\/p>\n<p>Workshops help participants and caregivers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find better ways of dealing with pain and fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Discover easy exercises to help improve or maintain strength and energy<\/li>\n<li>Learn the appropriate use of medications<\/li>\n<li>Improve nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Talk effectively with family, friends and health professionals<\/li>\n<li>Understand new treatment choices<\/li>\n<li>Feel better about life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The workshop series is free and open to the public. Space is limited \u2013 register by Feb. 14.
