The award is based on the paper \u201cSVM-Based Multi-Sensor Fusion for Free-Living Physical Activity Assessment,\u201d co-authored by Liu, Gao, and collaborators from mathematics and kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts, presented during the conference.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">***<\/p>\n<p>Eleven undergraduate and graduate students from the Chemical, Materials &amp; Biomolecular Engineering Department participated in the <strong>American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) a<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/capture-honors2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9328 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"capture-honors2\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/capture-honors2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"360\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/360;\" \/><\/a>nnual meeting<\/strong> in Minneapolis, MN last week, and five won honors for their poster presentations:<\/p>\n<p><em>Leonela Villegas<\/em> (advisor: Leslie Shor) won first place in the Food, Pharma and Biotech Section for her poster, entitled \u201cDetermining the Effect of Spacing in Protection of <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> by <em>Pseudomonas Aeruginosa<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Ethan Butler<\/em> (advisor: Jeffrey McCutcheon) received second place in the Separations Section for his poster, entitled \u201cForward Osmosis for Refugee Camps and Disaster Relief Scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Andrea Kadilak<\/em> (advisor: Leslie Shor) took second place in the graduate student poster competition\/Environmental Section for her poster entitled, \u201cPore Scale Effects of Soil Structure and Microbial Hydrogels on Soil Water Retention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Anthony V. La<\/em> (advisor: Yu Lei) and <em>Breanne Muratori<\/em> (advisor: Jeffrey McCutcheon) shared third place honors in the Materials Section. Anthony\u2019s poster was entitled \u201cFluorescent nanofibrous membrane for ultra-sensitive detection of explosives.\u201d Breanne\u2019s poster was entitled \u201cActivated Carbon Nanofiber Nonwovens for Microbial Fuel Cells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">***<\/p>\n<p>Members of the <strong>Steel Bridge Club<\/strong> attended SteelDay 2011 on September 23, 2011. This year\u2019s event in Wallingford, CT, was hosted by Infra-Metals Co. SteelDay is an annual event sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction. Members of UConn\u2019s Steel Bridge Club attending the event were Jillian Condiracci, Kira Todaro, Jason Ellis, Vincent Montemurro and Matt Tremblay.<\/p>\n<p>Infra-Metals, notes Matt, is among the club\u2019s most dedicated donor\/supporters, and the students found the event to be a very worthwhile experience. During their plant tour, they viewed an array of processes that go into the steel process, including a cambering machine, plasma cutter, T-splitting machine, and a saw cutting machine.\u00a0 The students brought with them the model bridge they designed last year and constructed it for their hosts, to demonstrate the results of Infra-Metals\u2019 donations and support.
