(Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of Connecticut has formalized its plans to open a campus in downtown Hartford, approving and signing documents to establish the new location at a site anchored by the former Hartford Times building.<\/p>\n<p>The UConn Board of Trustees approved the agreements Tuesday that authorize the University to move its West Hartford operations to the downtown site, where UConn plans to create a classic urban campus intertwined with the nearby Hartford Public Library, Wadsworth Atheneum, Connecticut Science Center, and government offices.<\/p>\n<p>UConn President Susan Herbst signed the paperwork with representatives of the developers, The HB Nitkin Group; and of the state Office of Policy and Management and the Capital Region Development Authority.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93976\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Hartford140603b113.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93976 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Hartford140603b113.jpg\" alt=\"President Susan Herbst signs paperwork with representatives of the HB Nitkin Group, the state Office of Policy and Management, and the Capital Region Development Authority at an  event to formalize plans establishing a new UConn campus in downtown Hartford on June 3, 2014. Although it has been in West Hartford since 1970, UConn\u2019s first campus in the region was established in 1939 in Hartford.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter months of preliminary work, due diligence, and planning, the vision for a UConn campus in downtown Hartford can now become a reality,\u201d Herbst said. \u201cIts original mission was to provide an urban educational setting for our students, and for the city \u2013 and it soon will again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s event also included comments from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt.-Gov. Nancy Wyman; Hartford Mayor Pedro E. Segarra; UConn Board of Trustees chairman Larry McHugh and vice chair Tom Ritter; and local legislators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an historic day for Hartford. The establishment of UConn Hartford further secures UConn\u2019s national academic presence and Hartford\u2019s place as America\u2019s best capital city,\u201d Segarra said. \u201cThe presence of 2,500 students, faculty, and staff in the heart of the city\u2019s economic engine will generate an infusion of activity that will directly benefit our city and state for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93972\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93972\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Hartford140603b024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93972 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Hartford140603b024.jpg\" alt=\"UConn Hartford will be a neighborhood campus centered around the former Hartford Times building, and will include the addition of a new, attached five-story building.
