{"id":95626,"date":"2014-08-19T07:01:39","date_gmt":"2014-08-19T11:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=95626"},"modified":"2015-10-02T13:10:48","modified_gmt":"2015-10-02T17:10:48","slug":"advocacy-works-study-finds-businesses-respond-to-lgbt-employee-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2014\/08\/advocacy-works-study-finds-businesses-respond-to-lgbt-employee-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBT Advocacy Within Companies Works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Activism in the workplace surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues is often effective at changing a company\u2019s social policies \u2013 even before government mandates bring about change, according to a new study by a UConn sociologist.<\/p>\n<p>The study, \u201cBenchmarking Diversity: Social Movement Outcomes in the Workplace,\u201d led by Professor Mary Bernstein, is part of a wider investigation into the impact of social movements in organizations and institutions in regard to changes in corporate policy.<\/p>\n<p>Working with two collaborators, Bernstein reviewed data from hundreds of corporations, law firms, and nonprofit organizations in a variety of areas including domestic partner benefits, health insurance coverage, employee recruitment, and philanthropic support. (iStock Photo)\" width=\"295\" height=\"197\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/man-with-tie-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/man-with-tie-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/man-with-tie.jpg 630w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 295px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 295\/197;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat we find is that the most important determinant \u2026 is whether a business has an LGBT resource group that operates officially within an organization,\u201d Bernstein said. \u201cWe also find that benchmarking is important, that companies look at what other companies are doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiversity has become a best practice,\u201d she adds. \u201cOnce major companies become more friendly to LGBT people, others follow suit. They have decided they have an investment in best practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Businesses often enact policy changes regarding LGBT employees before the government, Bernstein said. \u201cIt\u2019s very much about recruiting and retaining diverse employees, improving workplace efficiency, and expanding markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers will continue to study the data for other findings. They are interested in how employee resource groups affect a variety of workplace issues. And they are examining state nondiscrimination policies and how they affect companies conducting business with organizations located in other states that may have different social policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOftentimes, LGBT employee resource groups will meet with each other through national organizations like Out and Equal and they can apply pressure,\u201d Bernstein said. \u201cThey can say that if your customers who are other companies have these policies, then you ought to have these policies as well.
