A series of posts leading up to the new year will feature different aspects of University life. Today, a look at students.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>UConn students rose to the challenge in 2014, excelling in academics, research, innovation, creative performance, and real world experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Winter Olympics in February saw <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/02\/journalism-student-joins-today-team-in-sochi\/\">journalism major Gabrielle Levesque &#8217;14 (CLAS) in Sochi<\/a>, Russia, with an NBC team covering the games. (Al Ferreira for UConn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Innovation was the order of the day for a senior design project undertaken by two teams of engineering students who used <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/05\/students-design-artificial-kidney-with-3-d-printing\/\">3-D printing to create an artificial kidney<\/a>. Another engineering student, Rosse Gates \u201916, <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/06\/an-autonomous-quadcopter-now-theres-an-idea\/\">built an autonomous quadcopter<\/a> that could survey disaster areas. Gates is one of a select group of students who received a UConn IDEA grant to support the development of the novel project. In the spring, three UConn students in the sciences and engineering were named <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/03\/three-uconn-students-named-goldwater-scholars\/\">Goldwater Scholars<\/a>; three graduate students earned <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/04\/three-graduate-students-awarded-nsf-research-fellowships\/\">National Science Foundation fellowships<\/a> for their research; and political science major Molly Rockett \u201915 (CLAS) was awarded a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/04\/uconn-junior-awarded-prestigious-truman-scholarship\/\">Truman Scholarship<\/a> for her public service work. Four students received Fulbright awards for overseas study; two won <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/05\/three-uconn-students-win-prestigious-national-scholarships\/\">Critical Language Scholarships<\/a> sponsored by the State Department; and Ari Fischer \u201915 (ENG) received a <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/05\/three-uconn-students-win-prestigious-national-scholarships\/\">Udall Scholarship<\/a> for his environmental work. As the year was drawing to a close, individualized <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/11\/senior-wins-award-in-recognition-of-leadership-potential\/\">major Julianne Norton \u201916 (CLAS) won a Mitchell Scholarship<\/a> in recognition of her leadership potential. (Peter Morenus\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UConn\u2019s Husky student-athletes had a banner year, leading the pack in three sports\u00a0\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/04\/top-dogs-huskies-win-fourth-national-championship\/\">Men\u2019s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/04\/record-breakers-womens-team-earns-ninth-national-title\/\">Women\u2019s Basketball<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/11\/uconn-field-hockey-wins-2014-national-championship\/\">Field Hockey<\/a> \u2013 as 2014 NCAA Division I champions. <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/blog\/2014\/06\/uconn-basketball-bandwagon-travels-to-white-house\/\">President Obama applauded the basketball teams<\/a> during their visit to the White House in June for accomplishing what no other school has done \u2013 winning both NCAA Championships in the same year, for the second time.
