Dr. Augustus Mazzocca Named Outstanding Shoulder Surgeon

Dr. Augustus Mazzocca Jr., an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center, has been named one of the "65 Outstanding Shoulder Surgeons and Specialists" by Becker's Orthopedic & Spine Review.

Dr. Augustus Mazzocca Jr., an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center, has been named one of the “67 Outstanding Shoulder Surgeons and Specialists” by Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine Review. Mazzocca is the director of the Orthopaedic Bioskills Laboratory, and director of Resident Education for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is also an active team physician for the University of Connecticut athletic teams.

A resident of West Hartford, Mazzocca was selected based on his expertise in shoulder surgery, leadership positions, excellent research and reputation among other shoulder specialists. Physicians do not pay and cannot pay to be selected as a best physician on this list.

Mazzocca earned his medical degree from the UConn School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery. Mazzocca’s additional training includes a sports medicine fellowship at Rush University in Chicago.

Mazzocca has three patents on devices and processes to improve the healing of rotator cuff repairs and has designed three products used to reconstruct shoulder injuries. Among his subspecialties Mazzocca cites shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, shoulder dislocation and instability and degenerative disease of the shoulder and rotator cuffs. His research has received the Richard B. Caspari Award for the best international upper extremity paper from the Society of Arthroscopy.

Mazzocca is a member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society, as well as being a member of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow. He is a co-founder of the New England Shoulder and Elbow Society, which is a regional society dedicated to educating and researching problems related to the shoulder and elbow.
