The Huskies men’s soccer team has moved to the top of the national rankings, after winning its fifth game against a ranked opponent on Saturday, with a 2-0 win over No. 15 St. John’s in the opening match of its Big East schedule.

Soccer America has ranked the Huskies (8-0-0, 1-0-0 Big East) No. 1 in the nation for the first time since Nov. 19, 2007, a season in which UConn advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Last season, the Huskies were ranked as high as No. 2 on Oct. 5. UConn opened the 2011 campaign ranked No. 5 in the Soccer America preseason poll.

Connecticut is followed in the poll by fellow traditional powers Maryland, Creighton, North Carolina, and Akron. Louisville, at No. 9, is the next-ranked team from the Big East Conference. The Big East currently has six programs ranked in the top 25: No. 1 UConn, No. 9 Louisville, No. 11 Notre Dame, No. 13 USF, No. 15 St. John’s, and No. 25 West Virginia.

The Huskies will host in-state foe Yale on Tuesday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m.
