In addition to being involved with Community Outreach and an on-campus Adventist group, what guides Sharielle Applewhite is her drive to help communities prosper. She is a Student Ambassador for UNESCO, or United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, where her job is to help promote human rights education. Through UNESCO, Sharielle took a trip to Rwanda, which opened her eyes to the effect a community’s strength has on its ability to climb out of trying times. Over this past spring break, Sharielle visited Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma through UConn’s alternative spring break program. The group of students worked to help build homes, greenhouses, and other resources that will be useful to the occupants of the area. The senior is majoring in sociology and is looking forward to pursuing a career of community organization.
